If it's true as RDS commentator Ren Lavoie tweets that Theo Peckham signed a two-way deal with the Chicago Blackhawks ($575,000 in the NHL), that is a $500,000 big gulp for the one-time Edmonton Oilers defenseman, writes The Edmonton Journal's Jim Matheson. Peckham made $1.075 million the past two seasons with the Oilers but last year the Oilers were so annoyed with Peckham for showing up at camp after the lockout not in the shape they wanted (they'd likely have been thrilled to have had him about 225 pounds, not 240 0r more no matter how much muscle was there), they traded for Dallas D-man Mark Fistric. Peckham has had issues with his calorie intake in the summer months, but he was a solid, workman when he played. Last year, the Oilers basically wrote him off however, dressing him for only four games even after he got into fighting trim through extra work. They didn't offer him a new contract and the Stanley Cup champion Hawks grabbed him but for barely more than the NHL minimum. He's likely lucky somebody signed him. This is not a good time to be unemployed with the salary cap coming down to $64.3 million.
