Filip Kuba missed his second game with an upper body injury Saturday night. Kuba is very dependable for the Senators in all facets of the game but doesn't do much for fantasy owners. He's really only useful in exceptionally deep leagues. Stay tuned for updates as we know more about his status.

Filip Kuba isn't expected to play anymore tonight after suffering an upper-body injury. Last season's addition of Sergei Gonchar and the ascension of Erik Karlsson have really short-circuited Kuba's fantasy relevance. His eight points is reasonable in reality, but it doesn't do much for fantasy owners. He's really only useful in exceptionally deep leagues, so if you're in that spot, stay tuned for updates.

Ottawa coach Paul MacLean wants to see better play from his veteran defenders. "We expect more of (Sergei Gonchar), Chris Phillips, and Filip Kuba," he said. "They're three of our veteran defensemen and we need them to make sure they help these young guys get through situations." Kuba has one goal in two games to start the year, while Gonchar has one assist to go with a minus-3 rating and Phillips has one helper. The Senators have a very young lineup and an inexperienced back end for the most part, so MacLean needs to push his more seasoned players to get the best out of them.

Although it's just speculation at this point, the Islanders might be a good trading partner for Ottawa if they want to part ways with Filip Kuba. The Islanders are believed to be interested in acquiring a blueliner and they still need a bit of help getting over the cap. Kuba's production has dropped from 40 points in 2008-09 to just 16 points last season, but he's still a serviceable defenseman and a change of scenery might be to his benefit. Additionally, his $3.7 million cap hit should push the Islanders above the floor. From Ottawa's perspective, trading Kuba would open the door to Jared Cowen and David Rundblad both being on the Senators' opening game roster. Stay tuned.

The Ottawa Senators are reportedly trying to get rid of one veteran defenseman. With the Senators close to the salary floor, this move may turn out to be impossible. It was rumored that Ottawa tried to move both Sergei Gonchar and Filip Kuba at the NHL Entry Draft but there were no takers. At this point it appears Kuba is the front-runner to be moved before the season, but anything can happen in Ottawa.
