One reason Henrik Karlsson was dealt to Chicago was to open up a roster spot. The NHL allows each team to have only 50 players under contract and while the Flames were at 49 before the trade, they figure on signing American World Junior Championship star Johnny Gaudreau to a deal after the college hockey season ends. Karlsson also lost his backup spot to Leland Irving which was the real reason.
