C Phil Costa said physical concerns are the reason he decided to retire at age 26. Costa signed a two-year, $2.7 million contract with the Colts in March. He abruptly and surprisingly left that on the table by retiring Monday. "Unfortunately, the day-to-day physical rigor of the NFL season has taken a toll on my body and has been a driving force behind my decision," Costa said in a statement. He lasted only three games in each of the last two seasons, battling ankle woes.

Colts placed C/G Phil Costa on the reserve/retired list. The Colts signed Costa to a two-year, $2.7 million contract in March, hoping that he would push Khaled Holmes to replace Samson Satele as Andrew Luck's starting center. Instead, Costa has opted to hang up the cleats for undisclosed reasons. Said GM Ryan Grigson in a statement, "Phil feels it's in his best interest to retire from the game." The Colts are again very needy at center.

Colts signed C/G Phil Costa, formerly of the Cowboys. Costa, 27 in July, appeared to be an ascending player in Dallas before falling out of the coaching staff's favor in 2013 as the Cowboys used a first-round pick on Travis Frederick. We wouldn't rule out Costa starting at center for the Colts, or at least giving Khaled Holmes a serious run for his money.

Free agent G/C Phil Costa is visiting the Colts on Thursday, and is scheduled to meet the Bengals on Friday. Costa would be a rare value pickup for high-paying Indy, and could be their Week 1 starting center, upgrading on outgoing Samson Satele. He turns 27 before the season and has been effective more often than not when he's played.

Free agent C/G Phil Costa visited both the Lions and Patriots on Tuesday. Costa, 26, was an effective blocker more often than not when called on in Dallas. He would be a strong signing for depth in either of these locations, and could replace free agent Ryan Wendell as the starting center in Foxboro.

Cowboys released G/C Phil Costa. The move is a bit surprising because Costa is a valuable interior reserve, and the Cowboys signed him to a two-year, $2.7 million, cost-effective deal last spring. Dallas is in dire salary cap straits, however, so no cap casualties are truly shocking. Costa should draw interest on the open market as a backup or training camp contender. He's only 26 and has made 20 career starts.

Cowboys G/C Phil Costa is fully medically cleared after late-season ankle surgery. Although Costa made just three 2012 starts, Dallas' run blocking was noticeably better with him in the lineup. First-round stretch Travis Frederick will be the Cowboys' starting center, leaving Costa to compete for the right guard position with Mackenzy Bernadeau, or be the top interior reserve off the bench.

Updating a previous item, Cowboys C Phil Costa's new two-year contract is worth $2.7 million. The deal included a $450,000 signing bonus, and Costa will count $975,000 against the 2013 salary cap. The new deal saves the Cowboys roughly $350,000 against the cap, as he would have been tendered at the $1.323 million level.

Cowboys re-signed C Phil Costa to a two-year contract. He was previously scheduled for restricted free agency. Although Costa struggled with bad snaps in 2011, he's flashed difference-making run-blocking ability when healthy. Unfortunately, Costa missed 13 games in 2012 and had surgery to repair ligament damage in his right foot in late December. The Cowboys do anticipate he'll be ready for OTAs and project Costa as a long-term answer at center.

Owner Jerry Jones says he could see C Phil Costa as the starter for "several years." Costa started just three games in 2012 due to back and ankle injuries, but the Cowboys are high on him and are expected to re-sign the restricted free agent. He also has the ability to play guard. Dallas only has one locked in starter on the offensive line, left tackle Tyron Smith.
