The Chiefs were forced to turn to fullback Anthony Sherman as their top ballcarrier in the Week 17 win over the Broncos, as Charcandrick West (illness) was ruled out in advance of the contest, No. 1 back Kareem Hunt was shut down mid-game to avoid an injury heading into the postseason and Akeem Hunt exited with an ankle issue. Kareem Hunt should be back in the fold as the Chiefs' workhorse out of the backfield during Saturday's wild-card matchup against the Titans, but the team's re-signing of Spiller suggests both West and Akeem Hunt are at some risk of missing the playoff game. If both West and Akeem Hunt are unavailable Saturday, Spiller, who appeared in one regular-season contest for Kansas City before being waived in October, could serve as Kareem Hunt's primary understudy.

During his fourth dalliance with the Chiefs in 2017, Spiller produced no yards on two carries and didn't haul in either of his two targets Thursday at Oakland. His release implies Charcandrick West has progressed enough in the concussion protocol to revitalize the team's running back depth. As a result, Spiller will remain on speed dial in the event of another injury in Kansas City's backfield.

Spiller will sign with Kansas City for the fourth time in less than eight months, with the latest transaction presumably motivated by Charcandrick West's concussion. The Chiefs could deploy Spiller as a passing-down complement to Kareem Hunt in Thursday's game against the Raiders, assuming West isn't ready to play. The role likely would be temporary and doesn't seem to be of much interest for fantasy purposes. It's also possible the Chiefs simply allow Hunt to dominate snaps, given that he's proven to be more than competent as a pass-catching threat.

The Chiefs cut Spiller in advance of Week 1 in order to avoid owing the veteran back a guaranteed contract for the 2017 season. However, they subsequently picked him back up. After Kareem Hunt's stellar debut with the club, the Chiefs have opted to promote fellow running back Akeem Hunt to the roster in favor of Spiller due to his contribution on special teams. The 30-year-old will now look for a new opportunity.
