Panthers DL/OLB Antwan Applewhite (knee) has been ruled out for Week 4 against the Falcons.

Apllewhite, a Ron Rivera favorite, is a valuable special teamer, but he sometimes works as a situational pass rusher opposite Charles Johnson. His value to the Panthers is in the locker room.

Panthers re-signed OLB Antwan Applewhite.

A favorite of coach Ron Rivera, Applewhite gets high marks for special teams prowess and locker room presence. He's also flashed pass rushing ability going back to his early career with the Chargers. Applewhite will be a backup in 2012.

The Charlotte Observer lists Antwan Applewhite and Jordan Senn as high priority free agents for the Panthers.

Applewhite has a history with coach Ron Rivera in San Diego and can play both linebacker and defensive end. Senn finished fourth on the team with 73 tackles but is severly undersized and not likely to covet much attention on the open market.

Panthers signed OLB/DE Antwan Applewhite.

The Panthers are desperate for linebacker help after losing both Jon Beason and Thomas Davis for the season. Applewhite flashed pass rush ability with the Chargers and can help on special teams. Head coach Ron Rivera was with San Diego as the linebackers coach/defensive coordinator from 2007-10.

49ers released OLB Antwan Applewhite.

Applewhite goes to make room for the newly acquired Tavares Gooden. The Niners are ready to roll with Parys Haralson, Ahmad Brooks and Aldon Smith as their only outside linebackers.

49ers signed OLB Antwan Applewhite, formerly of the Chargers.

Applewhite played way more snaps than the Chargers hoped last season, though he did flash some pass-rush ability with three sacks and two forced fumbles. A May 6 DUI arrest was Applewhite's undoing in San Diego. With the 49ers, Applewhite knows DC Greg Manusky's system and can also contribute on special teams.

Free agent OLB Antwan Applewhite will sign with the 49ers pending a physical.

The Niners need to replace Travis LaBoy, who signed with the Chargers on Friday. Applewhite would fill a situational pass rusher role and help on special teams.
