The Patriots worked out free agent WR Johnnie Lee Higgins during the week. It's the first we've heard of Higgins since he was among the Eagles' final cuts in September. With the Pats set at receiver for the postseason, it's likely they were only evaluating Higgins as a possible "emergency list" name. Higgins made just 10 catches for 103 yards in 13 games for the Raiders in 2010. If he has an NFL future, it's on special teams.

Eagles released or waived WR Johnnie Lee Higgins, S Jamar Adams, RB Eldra Buckley, OT Austin Howard, S Marlin Jackson, LB Greg Lloyd, DE Daniel Te'o-Nesheim and OT Fenuki Tupou. It was thought Higgins had secured a spot in the Eagles' receiver corps after Sinorice Moss was cut loose earlier in the day, but that is not the case. The four-year veteran hauled in just 10 catches for 103 yards in 13 games with the Raiders last season. He should be able to land elsewhere as a special teamer.

Johnnie Lee Higgins is expected to return kickoffs and punts for the Eagles, "if all goes according to plan." We have to believe DeSean Jackson will still return punts in key situations. With Higgins bound for the fifth receiver spot, Sinorice Moss and Chad Hall are now on the outside looking in.

Philly.com's Sheil Kapadia expects the Eagles' fifth receiving spot to come down to Johnnie Lee Higgins and Sinorice Moss. Higgins has lost some of his explosiveness in recent seasons, while Moss didn't play a single snap last year after undergoing sports hernia surgery in August. Waived in November, he went unclaimed. Reports out of Eagles camp have Moss bringing slightly more than Higgins to the table so far this summer, but it's doubtful either holds a particularly large edge on the other.

Eagles agreed to terms with WR/KR Johnnie Lee Higgins on a one-year contract. Once an explosive returner, Higgins has averaged just 7.2 and 5.2 yards on 51 punts over the past two seasons. This signing has the look of insurance against a protracted DeSean Jackson holdout.
