Bowen announced his retirement Wednesday, ESPN's Adam Caplan reports.
EDGE Analysis
Bowen's career ends after most recently playing for the Jets, finishing his one year in New York with eight tackles as an off-the-bench player. Bowen spent his first five years in the NFL as a disruptive rotational player in Dallas before earning a three-year stint as a starter in Washington. He had a fine career.

Bowen signed with the Jets on Tuesday, Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News reports. The 30-year-old Bowen has started 56 games in his career, but with Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson entrenched as the Jets' starting defensive ends, Bowen will be limited to a reserve role in 2015. The veteran has not recorded a sack since 2012.

Bowen was released by the Redskins on Friday, Mike Jones of the Washington Post reports. The Redskins dumped a pair of veteran defensive linemen, releasing Bowen and Barry Cofield. The team recently signed fellow lineman Ricky Jean-Francois, who was released by the Colts earlier this week. Bowen had 41 tackles and six sacks back in 2011, but his career has otherwise barely registered from a statistical perspective.

Bowen (knee) will be activated off the PUP list in time for Sunday's game against the Titans, Chris Russell of ESPN Radio 980 reports. Bowen deemed himself 100 percent recovered from microfracture knee surgery earlier in the week, and the training and coaching staffs have signed off on him making his 2014 debut Sunday against Tennessee. The 30-year-old figures to be on a snaps count in his first couple games back, and he totaled all of 19 tackles (11 solo) in 10 games last season.

Bowen (knee) said Friday that he is at 100 percent and "absolutely" believes he can play Sunday against Tennessee, Zac Boyer of the Washington Times reports. Coach Jay Gruden is leaving open the possibility that Bowen could be activated from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list in time for Sunday's game. For that to happen, the Redskins would need to make a corresponding roster move before 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday. Bowen would be unlikely to start in his first game back, but he could contribute in a reserve role.

Bowen (knee) practiced again Thursday and could be ready to play soon, ESPN.com reports. Bowen remains on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, but a return to action is drawing closer, potentially as early as Sunday against Tennessee.

Bowen (knee) may be activated from the Redskins' PUP list and begin practicing this week. Bowen was forced to miss Washington's first six games after microfracture surgery in December landed him on the Redskins' PUP list to begin this season. However, with Bowen now eligible to return, the defensive end may be cleared to practice some time this week. Whenever he's able to play again, Bowen should boost the Redskins' depth along their defensive line.

The status of Bowen (right knee) for the Redskins' season opener remains unclear, ESPN reports. Bowen continues to work his way back from the microfracture surgery he underwent in early December. He is currently on the PUP list and there hasn't been a decision made on when he will be taken off and given the chance to come back to practice. Although Bowen continues to express optimism that he will be ready for the first game of the season, coach Jay Gruden may not share the same confidence, and won't guarantee the defensive end will be out on the field come week one.

Redskins DE Stephen Bowen (knee) said he is optimistic he will be cleared to practice sometime in the next two weeks. The Redskins showed faith in Bowen's recovery by placing him on the active/PUP list instead of cutting him and his $7 million cap charge. Bowen is currently penciled in as the Washington's No. 4 end behind Jason Hatcher, Chris Baker, and top reserve Jarvis Jenkins.

DE Stephen Bowen (knee) will open camp on active/PUP. It's not a surprise as Bowen is 30 years old and less than eight months removed from microfracture surgery. The Redskins appear optimistic though, as they've kept him on the roster despite a $7 million cap charge.
