Gregory announced his retirement Saturday. Gregory just signed with the Chiefs on July 31 and didn't give a reason for his retirement, but he's evidently calling it a day. The Chiefs have very little safety experience aside from Eric Berry and Husain Abdullah.

ESPN's Todd Archer considers the Cowboys a possible landing spot for free agent SS Steve Gregory. The Cowboys currently have just J.J. Wilcox, Jeff Heath and Matt Johnson as strong safety options, so Gregory could be a fit as a veteran to pair with FS Barry Church. Gregory started 11 games and made 79 tackles with the Patriots last season, grading out as a top-25 safety by Pro Football Focus. Dallas has roughly $6.42 million in cap space and could likely sign Gregory to a team-friendly deal with little guaranteed money.

Patriots released S Steve Gregory. The move saves the Patriots $2.85 million against the cap. Gregory, 31, was entering the final year of a three-year deal and started 13 games, including the playoffs, last season. Pro Football Focus graded him out as a top-25 safety. The Patriots will now look for a safety to pair with FS Devin McCourty on the back end.

Patriots FS Steve Gregory (thumb) is expected to miss a few weeks. Gregory broke his thumb during Sunday's Week 9 win over the Steelers. It's yet another significant blow to a defense that has already lost Vince Wilfork and Jerod Mayo. Gregory was wearing the communication device in his helmet for the last two weeks as the defensive leader and has graded out 11th among 85 qualifiers in ProFootballFocus' safety grades. The Patriots will have to coach up third-round rookie Duron Harmon.

Patrios FS Steve Gregory (hip) practiced on a limited basis this week and is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Bills. Gregory, out since Week 4, was cleared to practice Wednesday but isn't a lock to return. ESPN Boston believes Gregory is more likely to play than SS Patrick Chung (shoulder, hamstring), who's also listed as questionable. DE Trevor Scott (hamstring) and LB Tracy White (foot) have officially been ruled out.

Patriots FS Steve Gregory (hip) and CB Kyle Arrington (concussion) have resumed practicing. The Pats are putting in a full-pads practice, which suggests both players have been cleared for game action this week. With Aqib Talib returning from suspension in Week 11, New England is getting reinforcements for a beleaguered secondary.

Patriots FS Steve Gregory (hip) has been ruled out for Week 5. With Gregory out, rookie Tavon Wilson will make his first NFL start. Wilson has two interceptions and two fumble recoveries to go along with 11 total tackles in the first four games rotating with Chung and Gregory. Wilson has also played in three-safety sets as a hybrid linebacker in sub formations.

ESPN Boston confirms Steve Gregory is the leading candidate for the Patriots' starting free safety job. Other potential candidates include second-round FS Tavon Wilson, James Ihedigbo, and veteran CB Will Allen. Gregory figures to open training camp as the starter based on seniority, but will likely face heavy competition from Wilson, who's the superior talent.
