Mangold (ankle) announced his retirement Tuesday, ESPN.com's Rich Cimini reports.
EDGE Analysis
Selected 29th overall in the 2006 draft, Mangold started at center in each of the 164 regular-season games he played in 11 seasons for the Jets, with eight of his 12 career absences occurring in 2016. He was released by the Jets last offseason and never ended up signing with another team, as his ankle injury from the previous year didn't heal the way he wanted. Mangold was selected to the Pro Bowl seven times and earned First-Team All-Pro honors in 2009 and 2010.

Mangold indicated this week that he's uncertain if he plans on playing football in 2018, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports. "[I'm] in football purgatory. I'm not up and I'm not down. I'm somewhere in between, all over the place," Mangold said. "My foot is starting to feel better. I'm starting to get back into things. Is [playing football] something I still want to do? I don't know where I am."
EDGE Analysis
One of several players let go last offseason as part of the Jets' veteran purge, Mangold ended up sitting out the 2017 season while recovering from an ankle injury that hampered him for much of his final campaign with New York. Mangold, a seven-time Pro Bowler, would likely still draw interest around the league if he desires to keep playing, though the 34-year-old could have difficulty securing a substantial financial investment from any team.

Mangold ended the 2016 on injured reserve due to an ankle injury after appearing in just eight games. In his 11-year career with the Jets, he started 164 out of 176 games leading to seven Pro Bowl selections.

Mangold (ankle) will not require surgery, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.
EDGE Analysis
Mangold was only able to play eight games in 2016 before being placed on injured reserve. The center has been a cornerstone of the Jets offensive line for 11 years now, but may be asked to walk before training camp starts, as he is scheduled to earn $9.075 million this coming year, including a $2.4 million bonus due at training camp. The Jets will need to decide if Mangold's injury-riddled 2016 is worth the financial risk of keeping him on for the coming season, or if he is worth letting go, which the team recently did with veteran tackle Ryan Clady.

Mangold (ankle) was placed on injured reserve Thursday, Randy Lange of the team's official site reports.
EDGE Analysis
Mangold missed only four games through the first 10 seasons of his career, cementing himself as the cornerstone of the Jets' offensive line for a decade. However, his 11th season has been a different beast and will promptly come to an early end as he lands on the IR. The center has already missed four games this season after injuring his ankle in a Week 7 win over the Ravens. Wesley Johnson will continue to start at center with Mangold lost for the remainder of the season.

Mangold (ankle) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Connor Hughes of NJ.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Thursday marks the center's first full practice in over a month, as he has missed the past four games due to an ankle injury. Barring any major setbacks the rest of the week, it seems likely that Mangold could resume his role as starting center this Monday against the Colts. Head coach Todd Bowles said of the situation, "He's taking reps. We'll see how he feels at the end of the week."
