It's a bad sign for Byrd that he can't stick on a team that is without their top two tight ends in Fred Davis (suspension) and Chris Cooley (knee). He lost his job to practice squad type Rob Myers.

Byrd takes the roster spot of Fred Davis, who is suspended for the rest of the season. He'll provide depth behind Logan Paulsen and Mike Sellers.

Byrd was fourth on the depth chart at tight end. His release is perhaps a sign that TE/FB Mike Sellers is over the worst of his back injury.

Byrd actually managed to make seven catches for 85 yards and a touchdown during the preseason, but wasn't going to see a meaningful amount of snaps behind Zach Miller and Anthony McCoy. He's appeared in just one game since the end of the 2007 season.
