The Dolphins lured Cutler out of retirement last season after Ryan Tannehill (knee) went down with a torn ACL. Playing on a one-year, $10 million contract, Cutler struggled to elevate Miami's offense and ultimately finished the 2018 season with 2,666 passing yards, 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 14 games. The 34-year-old quarterback wasn't expected to continue his playing career, so his retirement is more of a formality than anything else.

Gase was able to lure Cutler from the Fox broadcast booth in September to serve as the Dolphins' starter in 2017, but with franchise quarterback Ryan Tannehill (knee) on the mend and expected back for the start of next season, the 34-year-old signal caller's marriage with Miami was never bound to be a long-term one. Cutler is set to become a free agent this offseason and has stated that he would entertain keeping his playing career going elsewhere if he's given the opportunity to start, but it's unclear if other teams would be interested in bringing him aboard in that capacity. With a 19:14 TD:INT ratio, 62 percent completion rate and 80.8 passer rating across his 14 starts this past season, Cutler was a below-average starter league-wide.

Cutler will start Sunday's game against the Bills, but backup David Fales is expected to relieve him at some point during the contest, a source informed Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Cutler is set to become a free agent this season and not expected to be retained with franchise quarterback Ryan Tannehill (knee) on the mend, so the Dolphins don't have much incentive to keep the 34-year-old in the finale for all four quarters of the finale. Heading into Week 17, Cutler has completed a 62.1 percent of his passes and has posted a 19:14 TD:INT across 13 games this season, numbers that may result in him generating only tepid interest on the open market during the offseason. Cutler has already suggested that he could opt for retirement if other teams don't view him as a starting option in 2018.

Cutler indicated Wednesday that he's open to the possibility of playing in the NFL in 2018, but likely only if he's given the opportunity to start, Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald reports. "I wouldn't want to move again and go somewhere and just to back up," Cutler said.

With Cutler bound for free agency this offseason, it's likely that any interest he would generate as a starter would come outside of Miami, as the team still views the rehabbing Ryan Tannehill (knee) as its top signal caller. Though it wouldn't appear he has a future in the Miami organization, Cutler will still garner the starting nod Week 17 against the Bills as the Dolphins aim to play spoiler for Buffalo's playoff hopes. According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, head coach Adam Gase was non-committal earlier this week about Cutler finishing Sunday's game, however, so it's possible Matt Moore (foot) or David Fales could direct the offense at some point during the contest.

The 6-9 Dolphins have little to play for in the season finale beyond pride and the opportunity to crush a divisional rival's playoff hopes, but it looks like that will be enough for Gase to justify starting Cutler and the rest of the team's healthy veterans. Cutler had one of his worst outings of the season in Buffalo two weeks ago, completing 28 of 49 attempts for 274 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions, but a return to a more hospitable climate in Miami should improve his fantasy outlook in the rematch. Cutler sports a 65.8 percent completion rate, 6.6 yards per attempt and 12:8 TD:INT ratio at home this season, compared to a 59.0 percent rate, 5.8 YPA and 7:6 TD:INT in road contests.

Cutler completed 19 of 38 passes for 286 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 29-13 loss to the Chiefs. He also lost a yard on two rushes and fumbled once but recovered.

EDGE Analysis

Cutler's one touchdown was mostly featured the handiwork of the speedy Jakeem Grant, who took a short pass a total of 65 yards to the house after breaking a tackle. The veteran quarterback did generate a strong yardage total for the third straight week and got back into the touchdown column after being blanked in that category in Week 15 against the Bills while also throwing three interceptions. The Dolphins were officially eliminated from playoff contention with the defeat, but for the time being, Cutler is still expected to start in a Week 17 home date against the Bills.

Cutler wouldn't speculate about his future beyond the 2017 season Friday, James Walker of ESPN.com reports. "I haven't thought about it," Cutler said. "You know, I'm focused on [Kansas City]. That stuff will be a concern of mine when the season is over."

EDGE Analysis

In the wake of Ryan Tannehill's season-ending ACL tear early in training camp, the Dolphins brought in Cutler, one of the most maddening signal callers of the current decade. While Cutler has flashed at times, he mostly has disappointed, completing 63 percent of his throws, averaging 197.8 passing yards per game and posting an 18 touchdowns versus 14 interceptions across 12 outings. As he intimated in his comments, he has his sights on the Chiefs, who picked off Derek Carr and Philip Rivers a combined five times the pas two games. Once Week 17 passes by, Miami will have a decision to make between Cutler and Matt Moore, both of whom have expiring contracts. Cutler could make the call an easy one if he retires for the second time in as many years.

EDGE Analysis

Miami fell behind early, trailing 21-6 at the break and Cutler responded with interceptions to end Miami's first two possessions after halftime and another in the game's closing seconds. It was an ugly encore after Monday's gem against New England and it effectively knocks the Dolphins out of the playoff race. The veteran has thrown multiple picks in three of his last four games, after no such performances in his eight games to start the season, and takes on the chore of facing division-leading Kansas City and then Buffalo again to end the season.

Cutler completed 25 of 38 passes for 263 yards and three touchdowns in Monday night's 27-20 win over the Patriots.

EDGE Analysis

Cutler was tremendous, as he not only threw three touchdowns for the second time this season, but won his first career game against New England in the process. The veteran found top target Jarvis Landry for a red-zone touchdown on both sides of halftime and sandwiched an exciting 25-yarder to Jakeem Grant in between. Although Grant dropped a bomb that would've resulted in another score during the fourth quarter, Cutler should still be plenty pleased with his performance. The quarterback will ride back-to-back wins into Sunday's trip to Buffalo.

Cutler completed 18 of 31 passes for 235 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions in Sunday's 35-9 win over the Broncos. He also rushed once for one yard.

EDGE Analysis

Cutler was considerably aided by a defense that accounted for 14 points on two touchdowns and a safety. However, he was solid in his own right, hitting Kenny Stills and Julius Thomas for his pair of scores and connecting with six different pass catchers overall against his old squad. Cutler now has multiple touchdown passes in five of his last six contests, although he's also failed to complete at least 60.0 percent of his passes in five of his last seven games overall. The 12-year veteran continues to be risky proposition week-to-week due to his penchant for turnovers and sudden downturns in passing yardage, but he'll look to build on Sunday's effort against the division-rival Patriots in Week 14.
