Cofield was released by the Redskins on Friday, ESPN's John Keim reports. It probably wasn't much of a decision, as the transaction saves Washington approximately $4.1 million against the 2015 cap. Soon to be 31 years old, Cofield should catch on elsewhere, if he doesn't agree to a smaller contract with the Redskins. He has never topped 54 tackles or four sacks in a single season.

Cofield suffered a high ankle sprain during Sunday's Week 1 loss and is expected to miss at least three weeks, NFL.com reports. Cofield was forced out of Sunday's game during the second quarter and will now have his streak of 80 consecutive starts snapped due to an ankle injury. With Cofield out for the next few weeks, Chris Baker could see increased playing time at nose tackle, moving Kedric Golston up the depth chart at left defensive end.

Redskins NT Barry Cofield (sports hernia) said he will "for sure" be ready when Washington opens training camp in late July. The recovery time for sports-hernia surgery is typically 1-2 months, leaving Cofield with plenty of time to get ready for camp. Cofield is a plus pass rusher that has struggled against the run throughout his career, which makes him better suited to play defensive end Washington's 3-4 scheme. The Redskins played him at nose last season, however, and it looks like that will be his position in 2014 as well.

Redskins NT Barry Cofield is sitting out OTAs after undergoing sports-hernia surgery earlier this offseason. Recovery time is typically 1-2 months, so Cofield should be ready in plenty of time for training camp. Cofield was a top-five pass-rushing defensive tackle over at Pro Football Focus last season but struggled badly against the run, grading out in the bottom eight. He's missed just one game and two starts in eight seasons. Cofield will be flanked by DEs Jason Hatcher and Jarvis Jenkins in 2014.

Redskins NT Barry Cofield restructured his contract, clearing roughly $2.4 million in 2013 salary cap space. Cofield agreed to trim his base salary from $4.05 million to $840,000, turning the difference into a "signing" bonus. The 29-year-old is signed through 2016. Cofield broke his right hand this preseason but will be ready Week 1.

Redskins NT Barry Cofield (broken right hand) will be active for Week 1. Cofield is out for the remainder of the preseason, but will sport a club or something like it for the opener if his hand isn't fully healed. It's not a major concern.
