Derek Anderson QB CAR 5 Days

Anderson returned to his second-string quarterback position upon teammate Cam Newton (ribs) starting Sunday's Week 2 win over the Lions.

Anderson filled-in admirably for Newton in the Panthers' season opener, passing for 230 yards and two touchdowns to beat the Buccaneers. However, with Carolina's franchise quarterback, who hadn't missed a game since being draft No. 1 overall in 2011, returning to health, Anderson has been relegated to his usual backup position.

Anderson looked good in Sunday's 20-14 win at Tampa Bay, completing 24-of-34 pass attempts for 230 yards with a pair of touchdowns.

Anderson got the start, filling in for Cam Newton (ribs), and showed a good rapport with Greg Olsen and rookie Kelvin Benjamin, as the pair of pass catchers combined to grab 14 passes for 175 yards and two scores. Check back on Newton's status for next week, but all indications are that he'll be ready to go. However, it looks like Anderson will be competent for Carolina should Newton not be able to play.

Anderson will start at quarterback for the Panthers on Sunday against the Bucs in place of Cam Newton, who is dealing with a rib issue.

Working with a revamped wideout corps that is a work in progress, Anderson isn't a high-percentage play this week, but the veteran QB does at least offer anyone scrambling for a Newton replacement with a replacement option.

The Panthers are reportedly leaning toward starting Anderson over Cam Newton (ribs) Sunday against the Bucs, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

The report notes that the team could reconsider such an outcome as Sunday's 4:25 ET kickoff approaches, but Anderson does at least offer Newton owners who lack QB depth, a potential contingency lineup plan for Week 1.

With coach Ron Rivera reportedly considering sitting Cam Newton (ribs) Sunday against the Bucs, according to NFL Networks' Ian Rapoport, Anderson could be pressed into action in Week 1.

While he would hardly be a high-percentage play in the event that such a scenario arises, Anderson does at least offer Newton owners a potential contingency lineup plan in advance of Sunday's 4:25 ET kickoff.

Anderson will not return to Thursday's game due to a right hand injury.

If Anderson's injury turns out to be serious, the team could find themselves considerably thin at the backup quarterback position. Although Cam Newton seems confident he'll be ready for Week 1, the team would have to turn to Joe Webb in the case that neither Newton or Anderson are able to go. Anderson's status should be updated by the team later in the evening, or at some point this weekend.

Anderson, 31 in June, has attempted just four passes since the 2010 season. He'll be back to hold the clipboard as Cam Newton's backup. Newton has yet to miss a start.

Sources tell the Charlotte Observer that free agent QB Derek Anderson is expected to re-sign with the Panthers.

There was chatter that Anderson would be following Rob Chudzinski back to Cleveland, where DA somehow made a Pro Bowl in 2007. Instead, he'll stick with the Panthers as Cam Newton's backup. Anderson has reportedly "drawn praise for his attitude" in Carolina's quarterback room.

The Browns have reportedly been in contact with impending free agent Derek Anderson about re-joining Rob Chudzinski in Cleveland.

If so, it would be a violation of the league's tampering rules because free agency hasn't begun. Anderson hinted on his Facebook page that a deal was already in the works to return to Cleveland as a backup QB. "Looks like it is time to make a return to a familiar place for some unfinished business," said Anderson. "I'd be honored to return to Cleveland to play football if the fans would have me."
