Scott wasn't part of the Jets' initial cap purge on Tuesday, but will join Calvin Pace and company on the street soon enough if he isn't willing to dramatically slash his scheduled $6.9 million salary. Releasing Scott would free up roughly $8 million in cap space, so it's possible no amount of haggling will save his job. Scott wasn't a liability in 2012, but is no longer an impact player.

The Jets can clear $27.7 million in cap space by releasing ILB Bart Scott, OLB Calvin Pace and OT Jason Smith. Beat writer Manish Mehta considers it a matter of "when," not if, they make the moves. This is surely part of the salary-cap masterplan deposed GM Mike Tannenbaum has been referring to in interviews. Mehta expects 2012 third-rounder Demario Davis to take Scott's place in the starting lineup. S Eric Smith is also a candidate for release.
