The 49ers paid free agent CB Tarell Brown $300,000 late last season as a "good-will gesture" after he unknowingly forfeited $2 million by skipping the team's offseason program. The $2 million mistake was on Brown's agent, not the Niners. The good-will gesture suggests San Francisco still envisions Brown as part of its long-term plan. Brown, 29, is a quality starter and fits the 49ers' free agency profile as a player worth paying because he was developed in-house. Perhaps the club will offer him a deal similar to Tramaine Brock's (four years, $16 million).

49ers CB Tarell Brown is expected to test free agency. Brown, 29, was the 49ers' No. 2 cornerback for most of the season, finishing with 32 tackles and 10 pass deflections over 13 games. Rather than re-sign Brown, San Francisco gave Tramaine Brock a four-year $16 million extension in November, but they haven't completely closed the door on bringing him back for 2014. ESPN.com's Bill Williamson believes Brown would have to settle for a team-friendly deal to return.

49ers RCB Tarell Brown returned from his rib injury in Week 15. He played outside in nickel situations, with Tramaine Brock remaining the starter opposite Carlos Rogers. Brown figures to get his starting job back, although Brock has been outstanding in his absence. The 49ers' defense is now at full strength, which is a scary prospect for the rest of the league.

49ers RCB Tarell Brown's Week 11 rib injury was originally diagnosed as a 4-6 week ordeal. The Niners' organization has instructed Brown to not reveal the injury's full extent, but he's going to miss a third straight game in Week 14 and will likely miss Week 15, as well. The 49ers will keep starting Tramaine Brock.

49ers RCB Tarell Brown's rib injury included "internal damage," and he will not play in Week 13 against the Rams. Brown had "a hard time taking deep breaths" after the injury, and didn't resume running until this past Thursday. The 49ers will turn to Tramaine Brock and Carlos Rogers as starters again. Brown's loss would be more likely to be felt by San Francisco's defense if St. Louis had a legitimate passing game.

49ers RCB Tarell Brown's rib injury isn't considered season-ending. However, he's expected to miss Monday's game against the Redskins. Tramaine Brock, and perhaps Eric Wright, will pick up the slack opposite Carlos Rogers.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports 49ers RCB Tarell Brown has "at least" cracked ribs, and is "likely going to miss time. Brown took a scary-looking hit near the end of the first half of Sunday's loss, remaining down for several minutes before being helped off the field. Brown has graded out positively in Pro Football Focus' ratings this season, but only narrowly so. Tramaine Brock will likely take Brown's place in the starting lineup if he misses Week 12, but recently activated Eric Wright is another candidate.

49ers RCB Tarell Brown was forced from Sunday's game against the Saints with a rib injury. Brown took a huge shot from behind near the end of the first half, remaining down for several minutes. He eventually walked to the sideline under his own power, but was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the game. The good news is, he has an extra week to heal up for Week 12 with San Francisco playing on Monday Night Football. Brown's status will be updated later this week.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports the 49ers are expected to sign CB Tarell Brown to a contract extension as early as this week. Brown, who missed out on a $2 million bonus in the offseason by not reporting to OTAs, is in the final year of his contract. A new deal would allow Brown to recoup the lost funds. Brown ended up firing his agent because Brown wasn't aware of the $2 million clause. Brown is Pro Football Focus' No. 22 corner this season out of 109 qualifiers. He's started the last 40 games in San Francisco.

The agent for 49ers RCB Tarell Brown is in talks with the team to recover his client's lost $2 million. Brown unknowingly voided a $2 million escalator in his contract when he skipped the offseason program. He's since fired Brian Overstreet and hired Joel Segal. "No, I haven't moved on," Brown said. He hopes to work out a resolution with the team before Week 1. Brown is in the final year of a three-year, $7.125M contract he signed in 2009. He's started every game for the Niners in the last two seasons.
