Griffin has 67 career starts in 119 regular-season games but likely will fill a depth role with the Bears behind 2020 second-round pick Cole Kmet, who showed signs of progress in the second half of last season. Griffin, meanwhile, caught 27 of 42 targets for 261 yards and two TDs in 14 games (12 starts) for the Jets. He turned 32 earlier this offseason and has never reached 500 yards in a season.

Griffin's release comes as little surprise after the Jets brought in two tight ends in free agency in C.J. Uzomah and Tyler Conklin, who were both on track to slot in ahead of him on the depth chart. The Jets will clear $3 million in cap space by moving on from Griffin, who recorded 27 receptions for 261 yards and two touchdowns on 42 targets over 14 games in 2021.

Griffin (knee) was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

Griffin already was on injured reserve and lost for the season due to a knee injury, so his placement on the COVID-19 list won't impact the Jets' game plan this Sunday. Tyler Kroft remains in line to take over as New York's starting tight end.

His absence paves the way for Tyler Kroft to serve as the Jets' clear top tight end during the season's final stanza.

Head coach Robert Saleh said Monday that Griffin is likely to sit out the team's Week 16 game against the Jaguars due to a knee injury, Eric Allen of the Jets' official site reports.

Before the Jets formally rule Griffin out for Week 16, he'll undergo further tests on his knee over the next couple of days. He likely picked up the injury at some point during Sunday's loss in Miami, where he played a season-low 39 percent of the Jets' offensive snaps and finished with two receptions for 39 yards on two targets. Tyler Kroft, who made his return against the Dolphins after a five-game absence due to a lung laceration, should take on a larger share of the snaps at tight end Week 16.

Griffin caught both of his targets for 39 yards in Sunday's 31-24 loss to the Dolphins.

EDGE Analysis

Fellow tight end Tyler Kroft (lung) made his first appearance since Week 9 and totaled two catches for 35 yards, but Griffin didn't deviate from his typical production despite Kroft's presence. Then again, that typical production doesn't warrant much attention in fantasy.

Griffin (ankle/knee) caught two of three targets for 28 yards in Sunday's 30-9 loss to the Saints.

EDGE Analysis

Griffin rarely comes off the field due to New York's lack of healthy alternatives at tight end, but the high snap count rarely results in many targets. He hasn't reached 40 yards in a game this season, and Griffin has caught more than three passes only once, totaling four receptions against the Colts back in Week 9.

Though Griffin was listed as questionable for the Week 14 contest, there wasn't much doubt about his status after he practiced fully Friday. Griffin has served as the Jets' clear top tight end since Tyler Kroft (chest) went on injured reserve Nov. 9, but he's typically served as little more than a tertiary option in the passing attack with four or fewer targets over the past four contests. However, Griffin could be in store for a spike in involvement in the offense Sunday, as the Jets recently placed their top two receivers on IR in Corey Davis (core muscle surgery) and Elijah Moore (quadriceps).
