Nugent signed a contract with the Giants on Tuesday, Michael Rosen of the Giants' official site reports.

The Giants will bring aboard Nugent to provide some experienced competition in training camp for the lone other kicker on the roster, Aldrick Rosas. The 35-year-old Nugent owns an 80.8 percent career accuracy rate on field-goal attempts across 13 seasons with the Jets, Buccaneers, Cardinals and Bengals, but he saw his performance slip a bit in 2017. Nugent missed six of his 29 extra-point attempts, which ultimately earned him his walking papers from Cincinnati last December.

The Bengals released Nugent on Tuesday.

Those clamoring for a change of kickers in Cincinnati finally have closure in that department. After hitting his first 15 extra-point attempts of the season, Nugent has fallen apart from the longer distance in the interim, missing six of his last 14. In order to shore up the position, Randy Bullock will take over place-kicking duties.

The Bengals will not work out any other kickers this week.

This despite yet another extra-point miss by Nugent, again to the right side. The takeaway from this can be either that the Bengals don't think that there's a better alternative out there, or that they've just given up trying.

The misses were extremely costly - the Bengals were down four points on their final drive and got to the Bills' 30 yard line, but only had time to throw it up for grabs on the last play, rather than attempting a potential game-winning field goal. Nugent's other missed extra-point on the season came in the London game against the Redskins, in which they might have instead won instead of going into overtime. Two weeks ago the team tried out other kickers, but opted to stick with Nugent. He might not be so lucky this time.

The missed extra point was especially costly, as it allowed the Redskins to tie the game late in the fourth quarter with a field goal. It was his first missed extra point this season, but Nugent is now 14-for-19 on field goal attempts. All five misses have been from 40 yards or longer.

Nugent was perfect on three field goal attempts in Sunday's loss to the Steelers.

The problem for the Bengals was that Nugent had to have those three attempts in the first place, with two of those coming from less than 30 yards. The Steelers shut down the deep ball and tightened up in the red zone, leaving the Bengals to settle for three points instead of seven.

Nugget hit three of four field goal attempts, including the 47-yard game-winner in Sunday's Week 1 victory over the Jets.

The one miss for Nugent was from long distance, just pushed to the right. After a rough preseason, Nugent bounced back with a good performance in Week 1, though his kickoffs still left a little to be desired.

Nugent has missed three field goal attempts so far in the preseason, though his competition in camp has been hurt, Bengals.com reports.

EDGE Analysis

Nugget might see a push from Zach Hocker on Sunday against Jacksonville. Hocker has been out the last two games with a strained tendon in his plant foot. Nugget has been serviceable but never really outstanding as a field goal kicker in his tenure with the team, though he's added to his value with his ability on kickoffs.

Nugent converted 23 of 28 field-goals and 48 of 40 extra points for a total of 117 points on the season.

EDGE Analysis

Nugent had another solid season for the Bengals, with a field-goal percentage of 82.1, including a two of three mark from beyond the 50-yard line. He is under contract with the Bengals through the 2016-17 season.
