Matt Barkley

Barkley completed 10 of 17 pass attempts for 168 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions in Friday's preseason win over the Chiefs.
EDGE Analysis
The 26-year-old was solid in his first action under center in San Francisco, showing accuracy and poise in he pocket against Kansas City's second-string defense. The only knock on his performance was an inability to finish two redzone drives that ended in field goal attempts. Brian Hoyer has already been announced as the 49ers' starting quarterback, so Barkley will have to fend off rookie C.J. Beathard in a battle for backup duties.

With Brian Hoyer acting as the unquestioned starter in San Francisco, Barkley will compete with rookie C.J. Beathard for the primary backup role this preseason, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
EDGE Analysis
Initially it seemed like the backup job was a lock for the USC product, but Beathard's rapid progression has placed him in a position battle with Barkley. The 26-year-old would figure to have an advantage to win the backup job over the rookie signal caller, but with a new coaching regime in town, the playing field may be more even than initially expected. Whoever comes out of camp as the 49ers' primary backup will have a decent shot as seeing the field this season when you consider starter Brian Hoyer's lengthy injury history.

Barkley signed with the 49ers on Thursday, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.
EDGE Analysis
After signing Brian Hoyer to a two-year deal earlier Thursday, the 49ers further bolstered their quarterback situation by adding another former Bear in Barkley. The 26-year-old Barkley showed flashes of potential in his run as the Bears' starter in 2016, completing over 60 percent of his passes in his final five starts and throwing five touchdowns in that stretch. He was prone to turnovers, however, as he tossed a whopping 12 interceptions in that span and 14 interceptions overall. In any case, he'll likely serve as Hoyer's backup in coach Kyle Shanahan's quarterback-friendly system.

Barkley completed 10 of 14 passes for 125 yards and two interceptions while catching a two-yard touchdown pass in Sunday's 38-10 loss to the Vikings, and he ended the season with 1,611 yards and eight touchdown passes against 14 interceptions.
EDGE Analysis
Barkley had a pair of strong fantasy performances when the Bears fell behind opponents in two of his first four starts, but after throwing 10 interceptions in the last three games of the season, he seems to have cemented his status as an NFL backup. He'll be a free agent this off-season, and he'll likely end up with a team that will give him a chance to compete for a roster spot.

Barkley completed 24 of 40 passes for 323 yards and two touchdowns while being intercepted five times in Sunday's loss to Washington.
EDGE Analysis
Barkley was absolutely dreadful, though with the Bears trailing by 17 points in the second quarter, he was able to pile up meaningless numbers. Despite throwing for over 300 yards with multiple touchdowns in the game, he was intercepted on four straight possessions in the second half, and he's now turned the ball over nine times over the last two weeks. With it being unlikely that the Bears will be playing from way behind in Week 17 against the Vikings, he's looking like a fantasy option only in leagues that start two quarterbacks.

Barkley completed 30 of 43 passes for 362 yards and two touchdowns while being intercepted three times in Sunday's loss to the Packers.
EDGE Analysis
Barkley did the majority of his damage after the Bears fell behind 27-10 in the fourth quarter, as he engineered a few long drives down the field to pile up the passing yardage. When the game was in question, the three interceptions he threw were one of the primary reasons the team found itself in such a large hole. This was the first time in three games that he threw for multiple touchdowns, and both of his big performances came in games in which the Bears trailed by double digits, and he'll continue to be a risky fantasy option when he faces Washington next week.

Barkley completed 20 of 32 passes for 212 yards and a touchdown Sunday against the Lions.
EDGE Analysis
After a quiet first half, Barkley salvaged a decent fantasy day while the Bears were trailing, and he was forced to go to a pass-heavy approach. Since his big effort Week 12, he's thrown one touchdown and averaged 202 yards in two games, and he'll continue to be a lower-end option in fantasy leagues that start two quarterbacks.

Barkley completed 11 of 18 passes for 192 yards while rushing for an additional 3 yards Sunday against the 49ers.
EDGE Analysis
Barkley didn't complete a pass until 90 seconds remained in the first half, but he threw for 170 of his 192 yards during the course of three consecutive drives that each led to a rushing touchdown by Jordan Howard. Despite having a fantastic performance against Tennessee in Week 12, he won't likely be consistent enough to trust as anything more than a situational starter in fantasy leagues that start two quarterbacks.

Barkley will serve as the Bears' starting quarterback moving forward after the announcement that Jay Cutler will undergo season-ending labrum surgery, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
EDGE Analysis
The Bears kept the door open for Cutler making another appearance this season, but after exploring all options, shoulder surgery has been order up. With Cutler's placement on IR imminent, Barkley will be under center for the rest of the campaign, while David Fales handles backup duties. In his first career start in Week 12, Barkley fared fine against the Titans, completing 28 of 54 passes for 316 yards to go with three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Barkley went 28 of 54 for 316 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions Sunday against the Titans.
EDGE Analysis
Barkley was in the advantageous position of the Bears trailing in a blowout loss in the second half, which allowed him to pile up the production against a weak Tennessee pass defense. Despite his big numbers, he was victimized by a bunch of dropped passes, including two in the end zone. However, his performance puts him on the radar as a fantasy option in leagues that start two quarterbacks.
