Clemens has agreed to a one-year contract with the Chargers, Michael Gehlken reported on Thursday.

While the move doesn't guarantee Clemens will make the Chargers' final roster, he certainly appears to have the upper hand in any potential backup QB battle, having held the job in each of the last three seasons. As a result, the 33-year-old will act as an insurance policy should Philip Rivers go down with an injury.

Clemens completed nine of his 15 passes for 77 yards in the Chargers preseason loss to the Vikings.

EDGE Analysis

Clemens relieved starting QB Philip Rivers mid-way through the second quarter and promptly was unable to generate much offense. Despite his struggles, the 33-year-old appears to have a handle on the backup job, as his main competition for the role, Mike Bercovici, threw two interceptions during his stint in the second half.

Clemens completed 11 of his 20 passes for 134 yards in the Chargers preseason win over the Cardinals.

EDGE Analysis

With starting QB Philip Rivers (rest) sitting out of the contest, Clemens was handed the reins to the first-team offense and performed admirably, connecting with Keenan Allen as well as Tyrell Williams on a handful of throws throughout the first half. Clemens appears to be fighting for the backup spot with undrafted rookie Mike Bercovici, as both players have seemingly passed Zach Mettenberger on the depth chart.

Clemens completed eight of 15 passes for 96 yards, and added four on a scramble in Saturday's preseason debut at Tennessee.

EDGE Analysis

Clemens was the next quarterback to enter the game after starter Philip Rivers got the opening drive, and he also thoroughly outplayed Zach Mettenberger (2-for-8 with an interception). The veteran is clearly ahead of Mettenberger in the competition for San Diego's backup quarterback spot at the moment, but nothing's set in stone yet.

EDGE Analysis

Philip Rivers still has not missed a game since taking over as the starter in 2006, so Clemens was obviously not needed for much this season. In the one games in which he actually saw real action in relief, he went five-for-six for 63 yards and a touchdown, proving that he can be a capable passer if needed. Expect the Chargers to bring him back again in 2016.

Rivers' injury isn't considered serious, as the team simply decided it wasn't worth putting their starting quarterback into a game they were trailing by 37. The Chargers are off in Week 10, allowing Rivers extra time to heal, but if the injury turns out to be more serious than initially believed, Clemens could get the Week 11 start against the Raiders,

Clemens completed 14 of 21 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns in Friday night's exhibition loss at Seattle. The Bolts did not play many of their regulars for long in this game, but the solid performance by Clemens is notable because it appears that he will serve as a solid backup option to Philip Rivers this year and might actually be an upgrade over former No. 2, Charlie Whitehurst.
