Gray had three carries for 12 yards in Thursday's 27-25 win over the Jets. Though he got just three touches and wasn't targeted in the passing game, Gray actually played more snaps than Brandon Bolden, who finished with a lone reception for four yards. Shane Vereen dominated the touches, piling up 43 yards on 11 carries, with 71 yards and two touchdowns on five receptions. It wasn't an encouraging night for Gray's (or Bolden's) fantasy prospects, but the Patriots have been known to drastically alter the running back workload split on a week-to-week basis. It still wouldn't be wise to expect much from Gray against the Bears next week, after Vereen played a starring role in Thursday's victory.

Gray is active for Thursday's game against the Jets, ESPN's Mike Reiss reports. Meanwhile, James White is inactive, with the Patriots choosing to activate the 5-10, 230-pound Gray to work in Thursday's wet conditions, along with Shane Vereen and Brandon Bolden. While he was just promoted off the Patriots' practice squad, Gray figure to see some touches Thursday, thus making him worth a speculative pickup in deeper formats, though a potential committee approach Thursday makes either of the team's RB trio a hit-or-miss option in Week 7.

As expected, Gray has been added to the Patriots' active roster, Ben Volin of the Boston Globe reports. While it's unclear how the Patriots plan to divide their Week 7 carries Thursday against the Jets -- with Shane Vereen, Brandon Bolden and James White also on hand -- Volin suggests that Gray could possibly see some work in short-yardage situations out of the gate.

The Patriots plan to promote Gray from the practice squad to their active roster, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports. With Stevan Ridley out for the season, Gray is in line to add depth to a Patriots' backfield that also rosters Shane Vereen, Brandon Bolden and James White. While Gray's initial role remains to be determined, at 5-10, 230 pounds, he could eventually do some of the team's heavy lifting in the absence of Ridley, though Thursday's RB workload against the Jets could well be handled in a committee fashion, with Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald suggesting that the team could well elect to ride the hot hand, if one emerges.

Though Gray remains of the Patriots' practice squad, he is a candidate to be promoted to the team's active roster in the wake of Stevan Ridley's season-ending injury, csnne.com reports. If Gray is promoted, he would add depth to a backfield that still rosters Shane Vereen, Brandon Bolden and James White, though in such a scenario the 5-10 230-pounder could carve out a role in the Patriots' backfield down the road.

Gray has been added to the Patriots' practice squad, the team's official site reports. Heading into the season, the Patriots will carry running backs Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen, James White and Brandon Bolden on their 53-man roster, with Gray thus an option to re-join the team's backfield mix in the event of an injury.

Gray has been released by the Patriots, the Boston Globe reports. As was fellow running back Roy Finch, with both players potential practice squad candidates should they clear waivers. Moreover, the moves point to Brandon Bolden retaining his roster spot with the Patriots.

Gray carried nine times for 20 yards in Friday's preseason game against the Panthers. With Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen and James White seemingly locked into roster spots, Gray is competing with Brandon Bolden and Roy Finch for reserve slotting in the New England backfield.

Beat writer Ben Volin wouldn't be surprised if either Jonas Gray or undrafted rookie Stephen Houston made the Patriots' 53-amn roster and played the "LeGarrette Blount role." Gray (5-foot-10, 225) signed a futures deal with the Patriots in January after spending all of last season on the Ravens' practice squad. He was initially signed as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame by the Dolphins in 2012. Gray is a one-cut power back. Stevan Ridley should get the first crack at big-back duties.

Patriots signed RB Jonas Gray to a reserve/future contract. Notre Dame product Gray shined in the preseason with his short-yardage prowess, but his game is otherwise limited. He outplayed Daniel Thomas throughout August. The Patriots have a growing fondness for power-oriented hammer backs like Stevan Ridley, LeGarrette Blount, and now Gray.
