John Kuhn is expected to open the season as the Packers' primary third-down back. Venerable beat reporter Bob McGinn confirms Eddie Lacy will be the Packers' "feature back" and will play plenty on third downs in hurry-up packages, but Kuhn will be Green Bay's go-to pass protector. It also means Kuhn has sewn up a roster spot amid speculation he might lose his job. Johnathan Franklin went 1-for-5 on blitz pickup changes in the Packers' preseason finale.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel believes John Kuhn is on the roster bubble. Kuhn is a serviceable lead blocker and protector on passing downs. But he's owed $1.8 million in base salary this season and the Packers have been trying tight end Matthew Mulligan as a battering ram. Kuhn's days as a goal-line touchdown vulture are over thanks to Eddie Lacy's arrival anyway.
