Free agent RB Jacob Hester participated in Saints rookie minicamp on a tryout basis but wasn't offered a contract. Hester was out of the league last season after being part of the Broncos' final cuts. He just turned 29, can carry the rock in a pinch, and cover kicks.

A seventh-round pick, it's a bit surprising Baker couldn't crack the roster with Ryan Mathews sidelined to begin the season, but he should be stashed on the practice squad. A blocking specialist, Sperry appeared in all 16 games in 2011.

Smith is also taking the same approach with free agent OT Mario Henderson. Hester will likely have a pair of offers to consider after visiting the Seahawks on Wednesday. The versatile fullback said he has turned invitations to visit multiple teams.
