The Redskins released WR Jabar Gaffney after "several failed attempts" to work out a trade. Gaffney's $2.65 million salary was likely viewed as too prohibitive even though he led the Redskins with 68 catches and 947 receiving yards in 2011. Gaffney was "surprised" by the news despite being informed last month he didn't need to attend the Redskins' offseason program. A consistently productive possession receiver, Gaffney shouldn't be on the market for long.

Redskins released WR Jabar Gaffney. Gaffney actually caught a career-high 68 passes for 947 yards and five touchdowns last season, but offered little after the catch. He became expendable after the Redskins committed nearly $30 million guaranteed to Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan. His bizarre April Twitter rant surely didn't help matters. The Patriots were considered likely to be interested in Gaffney if he hit the open market, but that was before they retained Deion Branch and Chad Ochocinco and signed Anthony Gonzalez and Donte' Stallworth. With at least 50 catches each of the past three seasons, the 31-year-old Gaffney won't have a terribly difficult time finding a new home.

Coach Mike Shanahan says the Redskins could end up keeping WR Jabar Gaffney. However, Shanahan did allow he believes he owes it to Gaffney to "give him a chance to look around the league and check his options." Were the Redskins to make the surprising decision to keep Gaffney and his $2.65 million salary, he'd begin the season no higher than fourth on the depth chart.

Jabar Gaffney confirmed Wednesday that the Redskins are trying to trade him leading up to the draft. Gaffney had a decent season as a possession receiver last year, but the coaching staff has made a concerted effort to bring in receivers with better run-after-catch ability. The Skins may have missed their window to acquire a late-round pick from a team such as the Patriots, who have already done their wide receiver shopping. Although Gaffney's Twitter tirade from last week appears to have blown over, it wouldn't surprise us in the least if he ends up getting released outright.

Redskins WR Jabar Gaffney posted a rant involving his soon-to-be ex-wife and free agent CB Lito Sheppard on his Twitter account Thursday. "4-12 is my anniversary woke up and couldn't find my soon 2 be ex wife anywhere," wrote Gaffney in the only tweet clean enough to pass along. It's not clear if the string of curse words directed toward Sheppard are related to Gaffney's ex-wife or not. We don't typically comment on personal Twitter tirades, but this will bring negative attention to the Redskins organization. Gaffney's roster spot was already believed to be tenuous after the team's recent free agent signings.

The Patriots will 'likely" make an effort to bring back Jabar Gaffney if the Redskins cut him, according to Tom Curran of CSNNE.com. Washington may consider releasing Gaffney and Santana Moss, especially if the Redskins sign Eddie Royal in free agency after bringing aboard Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan. Tom Brady is a big fan of Gaffney, who wouldn't cost much if the Redskins cut him.

Jabar Gaffney was held to four catches for 28 yards in Sunday's Week 17 game against the Eagles. Gaffney is merely a possession receiver at this stage in his career. He needed just 81 yards to go over the 1,000-yard mark on the season, but came up short despite being targeted a team-high 11 times. His 947 yards and 68 receptions both are career highs.

Rex Grossman mentioned his time with Jabar Gaffney at the University of Florida when asked about the duo's chemistry. If you throw out the zero-catch day against Darrelle Revis and the Jets in Week 13, Gaffney has racked up 24 catches for 364 yards and two touchdowns in his last four games. He left Florida in 2002, one year before Grossman was drafted by the Bears. "Ever since Florida, he's been my guy," Grossman said Sunday. Gaffney is a viable WR3 option against the Vikings' putrid secondary in Week 16.

Jabar Gaffney led the Redskins with six catches for 85 yards in the Redskins' Week 15 win over the Giants. Gaffney worked the Giants' soft zone all day, finding holes from the outside and leading the way with nine targets. He has another plus matchup with the Vikings next week and will be on the deep league WR3 radar. Over the last five weeks, Gaffney is averaging 4.8 catches for 72.8 yards with two touchdowns.

Jabar Gaffney caught six balls for 92 yards and a touchdown as the Redskins fell to the Patriots in Week 14. He was targeted eight times. Gaffney exploited big cushions from Patriots LCB Devin McCourty, particularly in zone looks from New England's defense. Gaffney has been an unreliable fantasy contributor for much of the season, so we'd hesitate to rely on the 31-year-old journeyman in Week 15 against the Giants.
