Start/Bench - Week 8 fantasysharks.com Wed 10/23/13 9:06 AM26 Comments

There are a few tweaks to the "studs" lists this week as injuries and lack of performance keep things very fluid on the fantasy football landscape. Also, with six teams being on a bye, it leaves quite an eclectic group of players to grace this week's selections. Let's get to it ... QUARTERBACKS STUDS Peyton Manning Aaron Rodgers Drew Brees Matthew Stafford Philip Rivers * bye week * Michael Vick * may not play Week 8 * Cam Newton Matt Ryan Tony Romo Robert Griffin III Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow Tom Brady: It's stunning, but, even with the return of tight end Rob Gronkowski , Brady is a middle-of-the-pack fantasy quarterback. Eight touchdowns against six turnovers are not stud-worthy numbers. Brady is no longer a weekly must-start option. START Russell Wilson, SEATTLE at St. Louis: Wilson is on a roll rushing for an average of 67 yards per game the last four weeks and tossing five touchdowns in that time span. St. Louis is circling the drain and wide receiver Percy Harvin is returning to the Seahawks offense soon (possibly for this matchup). Wilson torches the Rams this week. Colin Kaepernick, SAN FRANCISCO ‘at' Jacksonville (in London): Eleven carries for 68 yards and one touchdown last week are the key numbers. Kaepernick ran the ball out of the read option as well by escaping the pocket and looked somewhat like the quarterback that took the league by storm last season. It's the Jaguars ... enough said. Ben Roethlisberger, PITTSBURGH at Oakland: The Steelers are getting their swagger back and now have a legitimate ground game to help set up play-action passes. Last season Roethlisberger lit up the Raiders for 384 yards and four touchdowns. Oakland's defense isn't any better this year so look for a very productive day for Roethlisberger. Andy Dalton, CINCINNATI vs. New York Jets: Over the past two games Dalton has put up more than 700 passing yards and tossed six touchdowns. He's spreading the ball around to every skill position and faces a Jets pass defense that has picked off only one pass in the past four games while allowing seven touchdowns. Ride the hot hand and get Dalton into your fantasy lineup. Terrelle Pryor, OAKLAND vs. Pittsburgh: It's all about Pryor's ability to pick up yards on the ground. He's averaging 57 yards rushing per game and that will serve him well against a Steelers defense that is allowing less than 200 yards passing per game. Pryor will do plenty of damage on the ground this week and finish with very nice fantasy stats. BENCH Kellen Clemens, ST. LOUIS vs. Seattle: That flushing sound you hear is the Rams' season going down the drain. St. Louis shot down the Tim Tebow rumors and that is too bad. He at least would have made this offense interesting whereas Clemens just makes it bad. Mike Glennon, TAMPA BAY vs. Carolina: The Buccaneers are on a short week with a Thursday night game and just lost their No. 1 running back Doug Martin for an extended period of time, if not the season. The rookie quarterback has been locking in on wide receiver Vincent Jackson (22 targets last week) and the Panthers will look to take that option away. The loss of Martin, inexperience and the short week are too much for Glennon to overcome. Ryan Tannehill, MIAMI at New England: The Dolphins lack of a running game will hurt as the Patriots can now be run on with the injuries to defensive tackle Vince Wilfork and linebacker Jerod Mayo . Tannehill is prone to turn the ball over (four fumbles lost and seven interceptions) and cornerback Aqib Talib should be back for the Patriots. That doesn't bode well for Tannehill. Josh Freeman, MINNESOTA vs. Green Bay: Freeman was simply brutal in his Vikings' debut completing only 20-of-53 passes for 190 yards with an interception. He may improve with another week of practice ... but not enough. The Packers' middle-of-the-road pass defense will still be enough to keep Freeman from posting fantasy relevant numbers. RUNNING BACKS STUDS Adrian Peterson LeSean McCoy Jamaal Charles Matt Forte * bye week * Arian Foster * bye week * Marshawn Lynch Alfred Morris Reggie Bush Frank Gore DeMarco Murray * may miss Week 8 * Welcome Aboard Frank Gore : He's averaging 4.3 yards per carry while racking up over 630 total yards from scrimmage and five touchdowns. Gore has carried the ball 93 more times than the next San Francisco running back has touched the ball ( Kendall Hunter ) and is absolutely a must-start stud. So Hard to Say Goodbye Doug Martin: Even before suffering what looks to be a season-ending torn labrum, Martin was falling from stud status. The sophomore slump was in full effect as he was only averaging 87 total yards per game and had scored one touchdown. START Eddie Lacy, GREEN BAY at Minnesota: Lacy is averaging 110 total yards from scrimmage over the past three games and has seen his role in the offense grow exponentially. The Vikings are a top-five matchup for allowing fantasy points to running backs and Lacy will be leaned on heavily in both the run game and as a receiving option (he had five catches last week). Start the rookie. Le'Veon Bell, PITTSBURGH at Oakland: Bell looked very good last week against the Baltimore Ravens on his way to 99 total yards on 20 touches. He's a three-down running back on a team that has shown they are not afraid to feed him the ball. Bell is averaging 19 touches per game and will have a big week against a Raiders defense allowing 119 total yards per game to running backs. Chris Ivory, NEW YORK JETS at Cincinnati: The Jets finally were willing to feed Ivory the ball and he produced by racking up 104 yards. While the yards per carry was an unimpressive 3.0, the volume of touches (35 total) is what Ivory owners have been waiting to see. The Bengals aren't an ideal matchup for running backs from a fantasy perspective but look for the Jets to ride Ivory hard again this week and for him to add a touchdown to the yardage total he amasses. Knowshon Moreno, DENVER vs. Washington: The 49 total yards that Moreno put up last week were the fewest he's posted since back in Week 3. He did add his eighth touchdown of the season to reach double-digit fantasy points for the fifth time in seven games. Look for a huge week against a Washington defense that has allowed 107 yards on the ground per game and eight rushing touchdowns this season. Stevan Ridley, NEW ENGLAND vs. Miami: Ridley posted 175 rushing yards and three touchdowns in the two games against the Dolphins last season. More importantly, he had 19 and 20 carries, respectively, in the two games and the Patriots won both. Look for the Patriots to return to a winning formula and unleash Ridley on a Miami defense that ranks in the top-five in fantasy points allowed to running backs. BENCH Maurice Jones-Drew, JACKSONVILLE vs. San Francisco: The former fantasy star is now an afterthought and has another tough matchup (really, they are all tough for Jones-Drew now). He's averaging less than 55 total yards per game and does not belong anywhere near fantasy lineups. Zac Stacy, ST. LOUIS vs. Seattle: The Rams are starting their backup quarterback, Kellen Clemens, and Stacy faces a Seattle defense that will stack the box. Sit him this week. DeAngelo Williams, CAROLINA at Tampa Bay: Williams flopped last week in a prime fantasy producing matchup against St. Louis and now faces a much sterner test in the Tampa Bay run defense. Williams has not rushed for a touchdown in 106 carries this season and the Buccaneers have yet to allow a rushing touchdown to a running back. Not a week to be starting Williams. C.J. Spiller, BUFFALO at New Orleans : It's time for the Bills to sit Spiller down and let him get healthy. He's a shadow of himself and not able to produce due to the ankle injury and lack of touches (27 in the past three games). Buffalo may eventually bench him but it's past the time that fantasy owners do so. Lamar Miller, MIAMI at New England: Miller's highest offensive output of the season was back in Week 2 when he totaled 75 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown. Since that game, he has averaged 48 total yards per game and has scored once. He is stuck in a frustrating timeshare with Daniel Thomas. The Patriots are allowing 127 yards rushing per game but Miller is averaging only 10.8 touches per game. He simply can't be relied on as a starting option. WIDE RECEIVERS STUDS Calvin Johnson Dez Bryant DeSean Jackson A.J. Green Brandon Marshall * bye week * Wes Welker Demaryius Thomas Victor Cruz Jordy Nelson Torrey Smith * bye week * Vincent Jackson Antonio Brown Randall Cobb * out for multiple weeks * Welcome to the Party Pal Vincent Jackson: Rookie quarterback Mike Glennon only has eyes for Jackson, targeting him 36 times the past two games. Jackson has put up 19 receptions for 252 yards and four touchdowns in those games. That is purely and simply stud-worthy production. START Marques Colston, NEW ORLEANS vs. Buffalo: Look for the Saints to get Colston more involved in the offense. In the previous two games combined, he was targeted only five times and hauled in three receptions for 26 yards. Buffalo is a juicy fantasy matchup for wide receivers (top-three in points allowed) and Colston is in for a very big week. Jarrett Boykin, GREEN BAY at Minnesota: Injuries to wide receivers Randall Cobb and tight end Jermichael Finley have placed Boykin front and center in the Packers passing game. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers trusts his new toy targeting Boykin 10 times last week as he hauled in eight catches for 103 yards and a touchdown. The Vikings are a defensive mess and Boykin is in for another big week. Terrance Williams, DALLAS at Detroit: The Lions struggle to contain No. 2 wide receivers (well ... No. 1 wide receivers too for that matter) and Williams has caught a touchdown in three straight games. Chris Houston was benched last week for continuously getting beat and he's Detroit's best cornerback. Williams will extend his...

Romo or Stafford?

Harry Douglas or Jarrett Boykin? I got Marshall on a bye and I have Eddy Lacy as my flex. Any help would be appreciated.

What do you think about Benjamin Watson at TE for NO? I know Graham isn't 100%.

I don't have a great TE, but it seems like Watson is going to get more touches than normal.

Tom Brady blows he's getting traded off my team after this week. I never seen a guy suck that bad fantasy wise. Cost me at least 2 wins.

Medeiros Thu 10/24/13 4:16 PM

You've never seen a player "suck that bad fantasy wise"? You must be new to this.

tmactown01 Thu 10/24/13 4:58 PM

Qb wise I haven't. Considering the numbers he has put up the last what 10 years to have 8 Tds in seven games is a joke. I don't count one hit wonders like spiller as busts because they haven't put together a resume like Brady. I've forgot more about fantasy football then you'll ever know so no I'm not new to this.

Jag-elicious Thu 10/24/13 6:06 PM

Many simple factors to consider. Brady's working with MANY DULL weapons on offence that refuse to hold on to his passes. Any other QB in his position wouldn't even be an option for your fantasy team unless that qb would love to run the ball all the time

tmactown01 Thu 10/24/13 6:41 PM

I've watched a few of his games. A lot of his passes are overthrown, under thrown, or just nowhere near the wr. Regardless of his weapons he has lost a step. I've seen at least 10+ times he has a perfect pocket not a defender near him and threw a ball in the dirt...The pats are a decent team because of their D and a running game. Not contenders but a first round knockout team.

KochMang Thu 10/24/13 7:10 PM

tmactown, you talk a lot for someone who is 1-6

tmactown01 Thu 10/24/13 7:53 PM

It's one year one team. I don't have a 1-6 team, just running bad.

Medeiros Fri 10/25/13 10:04 AM

You didn't say that Brady was a "bust" or even a disappointment. You said that you had never seen someone "suck that bad fantasy wise." You then qualify your statement with an amateur scouting report of Brady's play. So, are you talking "fantasy wise" or in general? Because "fantasy wise" he wasn't even the worst quarterback last week. Obviously you don't know how to structure or support an argument -- your brain must be full with all that fantasy football knowledge . . .

turbolover22 Wed 10/23/13 7:00 PM

I have to disagree with Jason Witten being on the Studs list two times. Maybe once, but not twice. I have owned Jason Witten for the last 3 years, and have to say I am quite disappointed with his scores this year. He has only had 2 performances worthy of a start this year. I do have to give him credit though as I don't think his low scores are entirely his fault.

Roster spot, yes. Start, no.

RBulosan Wed 10/23/13 8:06 PM

should i start ELI or Andy Dalton?

georgegore3 Wed 10/23/13 8:36 PM

Dalton

TylerZ31 Wed 10/23/13 10:36 PM

Rodgers or RGIII?

lukev_30 Wed 10/23/13 11:58 PM

Romo or ck7

LeonelG94 Thu 10/24/13 1:53 AM

Rodgers over Rg3

Romo over kaep

patsfan115 Thu 10/24/13 9:54 AM

Does Kaepernick really deserve a nickname? Especially one as stupid as CK7? He sucks. Read too much of his own good press, and got very lazy this year. Teams have game planned him much better this year too, and he has yet to adjust.

He will be a good player again, but right now he should probably worry more about cracking zones than doing every TV Commercial he is offered.

KevinChang Thu 10/24/13 12:13 PM

Start Romo or R. Wilson??

shortdawg920 Thu 10/24/13 1:41 PM

Romo.. they will end up in a shootout with Detroit.

shortdawg920 Thu 10/24/13 1:41 PM

Romos numbers seem to always coincide with how their Defense plays.. The mroe they give up the mroe he throwns.. but if they are ahead they have really dialed it down.

Corby05 Thu 10/24/13 2:55 PM

Pick three... Harry Douglas, Blackmon, desean jackson, leveon bell

Nikkaseawn Thu 10/24/13 5:55 PM

Gore at Jax or Peterson at GB? I have Lynch in my flex so thats already decided

Tradd15 Thu 10/24/13 6:32 PM

@corby douglas,blackmon,and desean.

PenskeDave Fri 10/25/13 8:41 AM

Corby, go with the first three.

Nikk, not even a question you start AP. I know, I know, his numbers are down this year, but you never, ever sit a stud like him if he's playing.
