Following the free agent departure of Ryan Mathews, Oliver is a candidate the head the Chargers' backfield this coming season, ESPN.com reports. "Ryan was very unique," coach Mike McCoy acknowledged with regard to Mathews. "He's different than what we have now. But as that physical guy, yes, you can say Branden is that physical guy we have now." With that in mind, as the team's running back depth chart stands, Oliver slots in as the top option, with Danny Woodhead slated to return in a change-of-pace role and Donald Brown on hand to work in a complementary role. That said, it wouldn't surprise us if the Chargers continued to add depth at the position, either in free agency or through the upcoming NFL draft.

after all the hype midseason, I would be surprised if they at least don't give him an opportunity.
