Davis' one-year deal with Washington reportedly carries a base salary of $2.38 million, CSN Mid Atlantic reports.
EDGE Analysis
Moreover, $1.1 million of Davis' deal is guaranteed, which hints that the veteran tight end is virtually assured a roster spot with the team. That said, the 32-year-old Davis remains behind productive returnee Jordan Reed in the team's TE pecking order, though the report speculates that Davis could play "in excess of 25 snaps per game" when both players are available. In any case, after seeing Davis' fantasy value dip over the last two seasons, his chances of a bounce-back campaign appear limited so long as Reed (who caught 87 passes in 14 games last season) can stay on the field.

they needed a blocking TE and Davis fits that bill. His duel threat days are behind him. Skins already have depth at pass catching TE's.

Doubt they paid 2.38m for a blocking TE. Those guys are a dime a dozen.

2.38 would rank 32nd in TE pay for last year.

1.1 guaranteed would rank 44th in the league for TE's. not that great of guaranteed pay and pretty much right where it needs to be. plenty of blockers made more and VD is a great blocker. but his pass catching days are fading.

Skins still have Jordan Reed and Niles Paul (a WR coverted to TE) in line for catches ahead of VD. if VD has a great camp, he may just overtake NP for balls but thats a maybe. last year, NP beat out JR as the primary TE but fell to injury just before the season started and JR went on to have a fantastic year. now they can do more double TE sets with the addition of VD as their TE position is now very deep. VD is by far the best blocker out of the 3.

Good points, but i just don't see it man. Especially when they have 2 other TEs. Teams sign no-name blocking TEs on the cheap almost weekly. I can see them expecting more from him than what you're giving him credit for. But I agree, his pass catching contributions potential is bleak.

i am kinda confused, lol. sounds like we agree. the only difference is he is a named BTE instead of a no name BTE. other than that, sounds like we are on the same page. he will catch a few balls just to keep the defense honest but his primary role will be a pass and run blocking TE and thats the value. many no names are either one or the other. he will get his fair share of snaps, no doubt about it.

3 years ago, i considered him to be the best TE in the game because studs like Graham may catch a ton of balls against LB's but he cant block for nothing and his stats against CB's are pretty bad. VD could pass and run block and catch and did better against CB's. but being on the wrong side of 30 and the added wear and tear of being a complete TE has taken its toll. i think its a good signing at the right price for the right length of time.

Good discussion here. My personal stance is it was a good pickup for the price. He will likely serve as a blocker in most situations. Nobody on this roster is going to surpass Reed as the primary receiving TE. To me the key reason for this pickup was adding insurance to the often injured Reed. And for the price it makes a whole lot of sense.
