Cousins is not expected to sign an extension prior to Friday's deadline for franchise-tagged players, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
EDGE Analysis
If no agreement is reached by Friday afternoon, Cousins will play out 2016 with a $19.953 million salary. He'd be in line for a huge, multi-year deal if he were to have another strong season, but an ineffective or injury-plagued campaign could push him back into the price range for No. 2 quarterbacks. Cousins has a nice array of weapons to help him out, with first-round rookie wideout Josh Doctson joining a group that already includes DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon, Jamison Crowder and TE Jordan Reed.

Skins are comfortable with him playing under the tag to see if he can play at a high level again vs reverting back to pick city. The tag is basically a 1 year prove it deal. If he does well, he will get the deal he wants before the season is over. If he falls to far back to warrant that big of a deal, the Skins will get the deal they want. Little doubt in my mind he will do well. Prob not break the franchise records for a second year in a row but will do well and get his deal.

and if he does do well and breaks the franachise record again and takes the skins to the playoffs and maybe this time around not stumble on his face.

He has a knack to only make bad decisions at the worst conceivable times. Another QB like that is Ryan Fitzpatrick. They both light up the stat columns, I think Cousins is on a far better team than Fitzpatrick ever has been so his win-loss totals will be better and his stats will be better. I can remember years of Fitzpatrick in Buffalo where they would go up on the Patriots by 4 TDs in the 1st half and end up losing because they couldn't win all 3 phases of the game. The Skins have so much more talent than those Bills, they are just oozing at WR & TE it's disgusting, so he they can absorb occasional bonehead plays. I am not anticipating any regression from Cousins, I saw the light bulb go on.

yra maybe he learns from does boneheaded plays from last year and can improve on his decision making this year

Cousins > Rodgers

Favre also rode the bench then made plenty of bone head plays early in his career. The playoff game was not his fault. Rodgers took the skins D to playoff school.

Cousins mistakes where very limited after the first 4 games of the season. But he is an interesting person and player. Its not out of the realm of possibilities that either he, the team or both take last seasons success for granted and fail thinking it will come easy this year. It happens often to teams that have one good year out of 5. I think that might be part of the reason the Skins are saying "show me" with the tag.
