Speaking Thursday, Giants coach Tom Coughlin said RB Da'Rel Scott (knee) is "fine."

The New York Daily News hears Da'Rel Scott (knee) still has a chance to play in Sunday's game against the Broncos. Scott went down in Wednesday's practice, but the MRI results came back clean. He even has a chance to participate in Thursday's workout. Regardless, Scott will quickly revert to third on the depth chart if David Wilson can hang onto the ball and newly acquired Brandon Jacobs proves reliable on passing downs.

Updating a previous item, Da'Rel Scott's (knee) MRI showed no structural damage. Scott injured his knee in Wednesday's practice, causing him to put in a limited session. The Giants will monitor Scott's knee for any swelling, and he'll likely undergo further testing later this week.

ESPN New York believes the Giants' interest in veteran running backs is about getting a better backup than Da'Rel Scott. The Giants had a running back workout scheduled even before David Wilson's Sunday Night Football meltdown. That's because they wanted a replacement for Andre Brown (leg) without having to guarantee a contract for the whole year. Fantasy owners that add Scott this week are going to end up disappointed -- he might not even retain the backup gig for very long.

Da'Rel Scott rushed five times for 23 yards in Sunday night's Week 1 loss to the Cowboys. With David Wilson benched due to fumbling and pass protection issues, Scott took over lead back duties in the third quarter and stayed in for the remainder of the game. He had 51 receiving yards and was targeted eight times by Eli Manning, finishing with 70 yards of total offense. Scott is a replacement-level talent and dropped a pass that resulted in a pick-six and cost the Giants a chance at making a comeback. It not clear what Wilson's role will be in Week 2 after his disastrous performance, but look for GM Jerry Reese to add a veteran running back to the mix.

A source tells NFL Network that the Giants will wait and see how Da'Rel Scott performs Sunday before considering a veteran addition at running back. It's notable for two reasons. First, it suggests that Scott is ahead of Michael Cox in the battle to back up explosive workhorse David Wilson. Second, it confirms that the Giants don't want to sign a veteran like Jonathan Dwyer or Beanie Wells before Week 1 because they would then have to guarantee their contract for the whole year. Wilson owners looking for a handcuff are trapped in wait-and-see mode. We're highly skeptical Scott can be anything more than a change-of-pace scatback.

Giants placed RB Da'Rel Scott (knee) on season-ending injured reserve. Scott underwent a right knee debridement on Wednesday. In layman's terms, it was essentially a clean-up procedure to remove loose debris and tissue. The second-year back out of Maryland rushed for nine yards on six carries in 2012. The Giants needed the roster spot for Chris Canty's activation off PUP.

Giants RB Da'Rel Scott underwent a right knee debridement. It's essentially a clean-out procedure of the meniscus. Scott has appeared in four games this year, but only recorded an offensive touch in one of those outings.

Rookie Giants RB Da'Rel Scott suffered a hyperextended knee in New York's Week 17 win over the Cowboys, but said he was fine afterward. Scott didn't return after going down late in the first half, but sounds like he'll be good to go for New York's Wild Card tilt with the Falcons. Limited to 29 total yards on seven touches in 11 games, the seventh-round pick is far from a guarantee for a 2012 roster spot.
