Manning announced his retirement Tuesday, the Houston Chronicle reports. A second-round pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, Manning spent five seasons with the Bears and four with the Texans, starting 96 of the 128 games he played. He never brought much to the table from an IDP perspective, but he was a solid cover safety who also worked as a kick returner throughout much of his career. Manning could probably still be of some use to an NFL team, so it's possible he eventually changes his mind about retirement.

Manning said the plan for Sunday's game against Dallas is for him to return kickoffs, CSN Houston reports. "Right now, that's the gameplan," Manning said Thursday about returning kicks. "I really don't know because it's day-to-day, week-to-week." Damaris Johnson had been returning since opening week, but we saw Manning get a return last week and has been taking kicks in practice this week.

Manning returned one kickoff for 41 yards in Sunday's win over the Bills. This was his first return of the season. The Texans are still unsettled at return-specialist position and Manning has loads of experience returning kicks from his days with the Bears. Previously when Manning was the starting safety with Houston, then head coach Gary Kubiak didn't want to risk him to injury as a return man. Now that Manning's a backup in the secondary, that is not a concern for head coach Bill O'Brien.

Manning is expected to play Sunday against the Redskins. Manning was a bit banged up during the preseason, but had a good week of practice, and should take the field for the Sunday afternoon tilt, where he'll provide defensive back depth.

The Texans have signed Manning, NFL.com reports. Manning, who was limited to 24 tackles and a sack in six games for the Texans in 2013 due to a knee injury, returns to Houston after a stint on the Bengals' roster. He'll give the team added depth at safety following the release of Chris Clemons.

Manning is expected to sign with the Texans, pending a physical, the Houston Chronicle reports. Manning was released by the Bengals this weekend, but apparently will find a job with the team he played for between 2011 and 2013.

New Bengals S Danieal Manning says his broken leg is doing "fine." Manning fractured his right fibula in Week 6 and spent the remainder of the season on injured reserve. He's been doing on-field work the past two weeks and expects to be ready for OTAs. Manning will be the No. 3 safety in Cincinnati and CBs coach Vance Joseph talked Manning up as a potential slot corner.

The Colts are not currently interested in free agent S Danieal Manning. Indy has a hole at free safety after losing Antoine Bethea to the 49ers in free agency. But for now, it looks like they'll go the value route with in-house options Delano Howell and Sergio Brown competing with a draft pick. Manning had visits with the Bengals and Chiefs this week.

Free agent S Danieal Manning will visit the Chiefs on Thursday. That's if he escapes his Wednesday visit with the Bengals without a contract. The Chiefs are in the market for a safety next to Eric Berry after letting Kendrick Lewis walk in free agency to the Texans. Manning will turn 31 in August.
