Ex-Redskins RB Clinton Portis will announce his retirement at a press conference on Thursday. Portis was reportedly intent on returning to play this season after going unsigned in 2011, but he never received serious interest. Turning 32 in two weeks, Portis' explosion had evaporated by the 2009 season due to heavy workloads and an assortment of leg injuries. A colorful two-time Pro Bowler who often dressed in costume and created characters such as Southeast Jerome and Coach Janky Spanky, Portis finishes his career 27th on the all-time rushing list with 9,923 yards. In addition to earning 2002 offensive rookie of the year honors, Portis also boasts five top-10 fantasy seasons.

Free agent Clinton Portis says he's not officially retired just yet, but is "cool" with the idea of not playing again. "I feel great, man. We'll see what happens," said Portis, 30. "Being away for so long, who knows? I think I'm cool with the idea of either - if I get another opportunity or if not - to move on in life. ... I think I'm enjoying where I'm at right now." If this is it for Portis, he'll finish a nine-year career with 9,923 rushing yards. He was a top-eight fantasy back five times.

Scout.com reports free agent Clinton Portis has two upcoming visits scheduled, and has been contacted by four teams since the beginning of free agency. The report doesn't name any of the teams, and it's unclear why clubs would wait until the beginning of free agency to contact Portis when he could have been freely signed since February 2011. Portis appeared near the end as he struggled through injury and ineffectiveness in 2009 and 2010, and will turn 31 in September. He's likely played his final NFL down.

Free agent Clinton Portis is intent on returning to the NFL after sitting out last season. Portis has been medically cleared by private doctors after battling concussions and an assortment of leg injuries that limited to just eight games in 2009 and five in 2010. His agent claims a "handful" of teams have already shown interest, however tepid that may be. With evaporated playmaking ability, Portis won't offer more than pass blocking and perhaps short-yardage prowess at age 31.

Bengals worked out free agent RBs Clinton Portis and Larry Johnson on Tuesday. According to NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora, Portis has already taken a physical and could be signed for depth with Cedric Benson facing a three-game suspension. He wouldn't see much playing time behind Bernard Scott and Brian Leonard.

NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora hears that free agent Clinton Portis had a "strong" workout for the Titans on Tuesday. "Ran well and could be signed in next week or so," says LaCanfora. We'd advise skepticism, as the report could be agent-driven. The Titans are "monitoring" Javon Ringer's back this week. Portis would only be signed as backup insurance if Ringer's back tightens up again.

The Titans will work out free agent Clinton Portis on Tuesday. Since mid-August, Portis has worked out for the Patriots, Dolphins, and Seahawks, and has yet to sign. Tennessee is healthy in the backfield, so this may just be a workout to update the team's "emergency list." Portis turned 30 earlier this month. He's only a blitz-protection specialist at this point in his career.

The Seahawks will work out free agent Clinton Portis this week. NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports that no signing is imminent, but we wonder if the workout indicates concern with Marshawn Lynch's ankle injury. Lynch has been sidelined since last week and is already ruled out for the preseason finale. Portis is no more than a blitz-pickup specialist at this point.

Free agent RB Clinton Portis has reportedly told teams he is willing to pay his own way to fly to workouts. Portis' desire to play football obviously remains strong, but apparently not to the point that he stayed in NFL shape during the lockout. Two weeks shy of his 30th birthday, Portis' chances of landing a job before the regular season begins do not seem particularly high.

Free agent RB Clinton Portis worked out for the Dolphins Tuesday, a source tells ProFootballTalk.com. The Dolphins are likely just kicking the tires here to see where Portis is at. Reports out of Boston last week indicated that Portis showed up to his Patriots workout out of shape. Although Daniel Thomas has been a major disappointment this preseason, he's obviously not losing his job to a broken down Portis.
