Chiefs acquired WR A.J. Jenkins from the 49ers in exchange for WR Jon Baldwin. It's a change-of-scenery trade, a practice that's far more common in baseball than football. Jenkins will be "reuniting" with Alex Smith in Kansas City, though the duo combined for exactly zero catches in San Francisco last season. Jenkins' lone target came in Week 17. He has zero career receptions. The 49ers ran out of patience with the No. 30 pick of last year's draft after he showed absolutely nothing through his first two preseason games, fumbling away his only catch. Going from Colin Kaepernick to Smith certainly isn't going to help Jenkins' "fantasy value," but perhaps a new locale will do him good. The over/under on his 2013 reception total is still in the neighborhood of 10.

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh was noncommittal when asked about 2012 first-round pick A.J. Jenkins' roster security Sunday. "Things factor in, but -- longstanding -- football hasn't changed since the inception," said Harbaugh. "The best players make the team." Harbaugh revealed Jenkins will be tried "in some additional roles" this week, including kickoff returner, as the 49ers attempt to give him a chance to earn a roster spot in another capacity. Jenkins is not one of the team's best six wide receivers.

49ers WR A.J. Jenkins has been targeted five times through two preseason games, and the results are four incompletions, two interceptions, one catch for 11 yards, and a fumble lost. Jenkins fumbled away his lone catch. On Friday night, he was physically manhandled by Chiefs RCB Sean Smith. Jenkins has also struggled on the practice field, with multiple 49ers beat writers insisting he's not played well enough to earn a 53-man roster spot. If the Niners do opt to keep Jenkins on the final 53, the only reason will be his draft status as a 2012 first-round pick.

49ers WR A.J. Jenkins played into the third quarter of Friday night's preseason game against the Chiefs, but finished without a catch. He did have a 21-yarder wiped out by penalty. Jenkins was physically dominated by Chiefs RCB Sean Smith for most of the night, and his only other target was intercepted by Smith. Asked to evaluate Jenkins' performance, coach Jim Harbaugh answered "I thought he did okay." Jenkins remains on the roster bubble.

CSN Bay Area suggests disappointing second-year 49ers WR A.J. Jenkins needs to play with "more attitude and urgency" to secure his roster spot. Beat writer Matt Maiocco believes Jenkins could "easily" save his roster spot if only he'd put forth more effort. As it is, Jenkins is locked into a battle with a host of injury question marks and waiver-wire talents. The fact that the lightbulb still hasn't come on for Jenkins is a troubling sign.

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora is the latest reporter to hint A.J. Jenkins' 49ers roster spot is not secure. 49ers beat writers Matt Barrows and Matt Maiocco have suggested the same. Per La Canfora, Jenkins has been "beyond frustrating from everything I've heard," and the team may "just takes its losses and move on." Perhaps the Niners will ultimately give Jenkins one more year, but he'd have to do something special before September to earn a spot on the 45-man game-day roster.

The Sacramento Bee doesn't consider 49ers WR A.J. Jenkins a lock for a roster spot. Beat writer Matt Barrows considers Anquan Boldin, Kyle Williams and Quinton Patton the only locks in the 49ers' receiver corps. We'd agree on Patton, but wouldn't go that far on Williams, who is a special-teams type returning from a torn ACL. Cutting a first-rounder just 16 months after he was picked would be almost unprecedented, but Jenkins has shown absolutely nothing on the field. GM Trent Baalke and coach Jim Harbaugh aren't afraid to make unconventional decisions...like when they drafted Jenkins. Nevertheless, it's hard to see Jenkins losing his spot unless he's absolutely pathetic over the final three preseason games.

49ers OC Greg Roman cited A.J. Jenkins' "down-in and down-out consistency" as the primary factor hindering his improvement. Roman says Jenkins is capable of "spectacular catches" and his route running is "getting better," but the 2012 first-rounder played behind practice squad-type Marlon Moore in the preseason opener and fumbled away his lone reception. Until Jenkins shows in a game something that might indicate he's not a bust, we're going to consider him one. He's not even worth a fantasy flier.

CSN Bay Area doesn't think A.J. Jenkins "has done enough on the field" to earn a roster spot with the 49ers. Top beat writer Matt Maiocco groups Jenkins in with camp bodies Lavelle Hawkins, Ricardo Lockette, and Chuck Jacobs as receivers who haven't shown enough to win jobs. Maiocco has Anquan Boldin, Mario Manningham, Kyle Williams, and Quinton Patton as near locks at receiver, while Marlon Moore, Austin Collie, Kassim Osgood, and Chad Hall are in the second tier. Jenkins fumbled his lone reception in Thursday night's preseason opener, and he's just trying to keep his head above water. At this point, it wouldn't be a shock if he was cut.

Asked about A.J. Jenkins' preseason debut, 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said "uh, could have been better." Harbs was just stating the obvious - Jenkins fumbled away his lone reception - but rarely will a coach be so forthright. It speaks to the 49ers' bubbling frustration with their ineffective second-year wideout, and suggests his lowly status on the depth chart isn't just a motivational ploy. Jenkins simply hasn't shown anything since being the No. 30 pick of last year's draft. Even with the 49ers thin at wideout, Jenkins isn't a viable fantasy flier. The only way that will change is if he lights it up across San Francisco's final three preseason games. We're not counting on it.
