Smith will start the Jets' Week 1 game against the Raiders, NFL Network's Albert Breer reports. Not that anything else was expected, but the Jets made an announcement following Friday's preseason game, during which Smith completed 9-of-14 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown. Both Smith and Mike Vick have played reasonably well this preseason, a scenario that always figured to end with the youngster starting. Smith may have a hard time carrying his success into the games that count, but his early-season schedule looks favorable from a fantasy perspective, and his supporting cast has been upgraded from last year.

Geno Smith is the 2nd biggest joke of the NFL. Running a very close second to Eli Manning. 2 of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL and these idiotic ccoaches choose to keep them? I understand that Tom Coughlin is too old to make wise decisions (i think he's like 97), and Rex Ryan....well, he's Rex Ryan. Both of them have to go, so many great coaches out there just waiting to be chosen to lead a team.

Plenty of hard working, decent quarterbacks out there too that won't lead the NFL in interceptions like Eli and Geno that need to be given a chance. It's not hard to be a better QB than those 2. They just flat out suck more than any other back-up QB in the league.

Eli was decent until last year so I can understand keeping him as the starter hoping that he can be decent again. Smith on the other hand, is terrible and has shown no signs of being good. Starting Smith over Vick (who is better in every way and has never had a season as bad as Smith did last year) is idiotic. They both will probably have historically bad seasons again this year, unless Eli can get back to his old not terrible self.

Umm Geno was a rookie last year...it takes 3 years to judge a rookie. You two don't know anything about football.

Eli has 2 sb rings how many do the jets have in the past 10 years?? Oh yea....

Warriors, you are an idiot. Sure, Eli had a bad year last year, but he's won 2 super bowl rings. I don't think he's the worst QB in the league. Perhaps you just have New York heartache because your teams suck right now. Sometimes a QB looks bad but it is because they have an awful offensive line. Ever think about that? Geno is a rookie and give him some time. Maybe if he was on a good team he would have a chance.

@MBarbr: Name one decent QB who had a worse rookie season than Geno did last year. Sure, it takes time for a QB to develop, but you can usually tell how much potential a QB has his rookie year, and Geno showed very little potential. You can disagree, but we will see who is right in the next couple years.

For what it's worth, I'm with @MBarbrHairNFace (in regards to Geno Smith; not the "idiot" part). Geno will probably finish in the low 20's or thereabouts in QB production, which means there will be 10 or so opening day starting QBs that will be worse than him.

Time will tell.

well i never said idiot. just they dont know anything. let me see blaine gabbert but why oh yeah horrible team and was thrown into the big time right away. not everone has the poise to start their rookie season. But there are many great players that have succeeded by waiting out the year or even in time. look at Kurt Warner. He couldnt cut it as a Qb druing his time, so he bagged groceries and came back and did better...look at Flutie same thing. Im not a Jets fan or a Geno fan but in order to be successful you need a good cast around you (WR, TE) look what happened to Brady last year. He stunk compared what he use to be and why..no WR and a RB that fumbled the ball. But yes time will tell and i can assure you im right and Geno will be fine. Already a better passer and runner than Young was no not steve and who was that first round QB on the raiders years ago lol
