CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco confirms Kendall Hunter "clearly" remains the 49ers' No. 2 running back entering training camp. Hunter has a lead on Carlos Hyde and Marcus Lattimore "based on his knowledge of the 49ers' protections and willingness to stick his face in to take on blitzers." Pass pro is something with which first-year players like Hyde and Lattimore routinely struggle. We still prefer Hyde over Hunter as Frank Gore's handcuff, because Hyde would be a better bet for early-down and goal-line work in the event of injury to 31-year-old Gore.
