Gabbert had his finest game of the preseason Sunday, completing 7-of-11 pass attempts for 66 yards and a touchdown in the win over the Chargers. There was pressure on Gabbert to perform Sunday after struggling mightily in his previous two starts, but the former first round pick finally came through with a strong performance Sunday. There were rumblings that Josh Johnson could leap frog Gabbert on the depth chart, but Sunday's strong showing should silence those talks for at least another week. It should be noted that Gabbert will be owed $2 million whether the 49ers keep him or not, so he is all but a lock for the backup position behind Colin Kaepernick.
