Butler has been diagnosed with a sprained left thumb, and will miss the rest of the preseason, the Chicago Tribune's K.C. Johnson reports.

The Bulls will reevaluate the starting shooting guard prior to the start of the regular season, so he should be considered questionable in that sense. Butler won't practice this week, so hopefully the time off will allow him to heal up, and even if he misses the first couple games of the regular season, he should be back on the court in relatively short order. Kirk Hinrich would be his most likely replacement in the starting lineup if he had to miss time.

Butler was extremely productive in limited action Monday and has shown an improved offensive game so far this preseason. If he can keep that going throughout the regular season, he would really increase his fantasy value as he is always a reliable source for defensive stats as well.

Butler lost some weight this summer and coach Tom Thibodeau believes he will benefit from that this season, ESPN Chicago reports.

Butler played heavy minutes for the Bulls last season and will have a significant role with the team again this season, although he might see a slight decrease in playing time due to more depth on the roster. He shot only 39.7 percent from the field last season, so he'll need to improve offensively if he is going to take his fantasy value to the next level.

Jimmy Butler will not participate in Team USA's training camp this week due to a slightly strained groin.

The injury doesn't sound serious but Butler is taking a conservative approach, which should please the Bulls even as it weakens Team USA. Earning a spot on the team would have given Butler an opportunity to learn from the league's best while gaining international exposure, so it's an unfortunate turn of events for the Bulls' 24-year-old shooting guard.

Jimmy Butler has been named to the 2014 USA Basketball Select Team.

Butler's breakout 2013-14 season during which he averaged 13.1 points, 1.0 three-pointers, 4.9 boards, 2.6 assists, and 1.9 steals went a long way towards landing the 24-year-old on the squad. "USA Basketball's Select Teams are critical for getting some of the game's brightest and most promising young players experience at the USA National Team level, and getting them into our pipeline," said Jerry Colangelo, USA Basketball National Team managing director. If Butler is able to utilize this opportunity to take his game to another level, he could end up being a steal in the middle-to-late rounds of fantasy drafts.
