Thompson received a qualifying offer from the Cavaliers on Tuesday, Sam Amico of FOX Sports reports.

As expected, Thompson will officially be a restricted free agent this offseason, and the Cavs appear intent on bringing him back on a new, long-term deal. Cleveland may have to overpay a bit for Thompson's services, but the young forward was a valuable piece last season, particularly after Anderson Varejao and Kevin Love went down with injuries.

Thompson played well in the Cavaliers' playoff run after Kevin Love (shoulder) went out. He averaged 9.6 points and 10.8 rebounds in 36.3 minutes in the postseason after providing 8.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in 26.8 minutes in the regular season.

Thompson showed that he could stay in front of smaller players on defense while providing excellent offensive rebounding. The Canadian is just 24 years old and shot a career-high 54.7 percent in his first year with LeBron James. He shares the same agent as James, so he could sign a lucrative contract extension in the offseason.

Thompson provided 15 points (7-12 FG, 1-2 FT), 13 rebounds, and one block in 37 minutes against the Warriors on Tuesday.

Following the defeat, Thompson confirmed he wouldn't participate with the Canadian National Team, opting for rest heading into free agency. He closed out the NBA Finals averaging 10.0 points, 13.0 rebounds, 1.0 blocks, 0.7 steals, and 0.3 assists in 41.1 minutes per game.

Thompson scored 10 points (4-6 FG, 2-4 FT) in the Cavaliers' Game 3 win after consecutive two-point outings. He registered his sixth postseason double-double with a team-high 13 rebounds and recorded one assist in 44 minutes.

Thompson is averaging 14.0 rebounds per game and 8.3 offensive rebounds per game in the NBA Finals. Even though he's played 43.6 minutes per game during the Finals, he's averaging a miniscule 0.7 assists, 0.7 steals, and 0.7 blocks per game while shooting 50 percent from the free-throw line, exposing his fantasy basketball deficiencies.

Thompson brought down 14 rebounds, including seven offensive boards, with just two points (0-5 FG, 2-4 FT) in 39 minutes in the win over the Warriors on Sunday.

The Warriors intentionally fouled Thompson as they came back to tie the game in regulation. He has hit just 57.6 percent of his free throws in the playoffs and the strategy was successful. Thompson continued to be strong on the boards and play great defense, but he is going to have to knock down his freebies.

Thompson snagged 15 rebounds, including six on the offensive end, but scored just two points (1-4 FG) in 47 minutes in the loss to Golden State on Thursday.

Thompson generally doesn't even look to score when he gets an offensive rebound. He looks for LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, which isn't a bad plan either. Thompson will continue to see big minutes because he can defend on switches, but his scoring will be limited.

Thompson scored 10 points (5-7 FG, 0-3 FT) with seven rebounds and two assists in 43 minutes in the overtime win against Atlanta on Sunday.

Thompson was active on the boards and was part of the Cavaliers' switching defense in which he stayed in front of smaller Atlanta players. He had some ugly free throw attempts and has hit 50 percent of his freebies in his last five games. Thompson's streak of double-digit rebounding games ended at four.

Thompson has been holding down the fort on the glass for the Cavaliers, consistently posting double-digit figures. He'll continue to play well moving forward as long as he remains healthy.

Thompson (shoulder) indicated Tuesday that he'll be ready to play in Wednesday's Game 1 against the Hawks, the Akron Beacon Journal reports.

Thompson tweaked his shoulder during Game 6 against the Bulls after taking a hard fall while leaping for an alley-oop. He remained in the game, and while the injury was never thought to be anything serious, Thompson had been dealing with some residual soreness over the past week. When asked about the shoulder after Tuesday's session, Thompson said it "feels great, I'm ready to bang." In the continued absence of Kevin Love (shoulder), expect Thompson to see big minutes against Atlanta in the Eastern Conference Finals. He averaged 9.3 points and 11.2 rebounds in 37.0 minutes against Chicago in the second round and will again have a chance to put up big rebounding numbers versus a Hawks team that posted the fourth-worst rebounding differential in the league during the regular season.
