Nick Hundley C COL 30 Days

Hundley is expected to serve as the Rockies' primary catcher this season,'s Thomas Harding reports.

While the Rockies haven't formally anointed Hundley as their No. 1 backstop, Wilin Rosario's early arrival at spring training to work out at first base suggests there will be a changing of the guard behind the plate. Rosario's well-documented struggles as a game-caller have prompted the Rockies to try to turn him into a versatile right-handed bench bat, which should enable the defensive-minded Hundley to serve as the primary catcher against right-handed pitching. Hundley has historically been an anemic contributor offensively, but having Coors Field as a home park should result in dramatic improvement upon last season's .243/.273/.358 batting line. In deeper two-catcher leagues, he should warrant consideration on draft day.

Hundley signed a two-year, $6 million contract with the Rockies on Wednesday, Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun reports.

While the Orioles were hoping to bring him back as a backup option behind Matt Wieters, Hundley received a better offer -- and a clearer path to at-bats -- with the Rockies. The organization appears to have soured on Wilin Rosario's lack of polish behind the plate, perhaps enabling Hundley to stake a claim to the No. 1 job. Hundley lacks Rosario's power and posted a weak .273 on-base percentage last season, but his skills as a game-caller may be significant enough to make up for his offensive deficiencies. In fact, simply by calling Coors Field his home park, Hundley almost certain stands to notice an improvement in his battling line.

Hundley's 2015 club option was declined by the Orioles on Saturday.

Hundley would have made $5 million if the Orioles decided to pick up his option, but the team chose to move on instead. The 31-year-old catcher hit .243/.273/358 with six home runs and 22 RBI over 218 at-bats last season between the Padres and the Orioles, and will now be able to shop his services around the league in the offseason.

Hundley is not in the lineup for Game 2 of the ALCS against the Royals on Saturday, Brittany Ghiroli of reports.

Hundley collected his first hit of the postseason Friday, an infield single off James Shields in the bottom of the second inning. He'll give way to Caleb Joseph on Saturday, but Hundley, despite his struggles, seems likely to continue seeing most of the starts behind the plate for Baltimore.

Hundley had the biggest hit of the afternoon for the Orioles Monday, launching a three-run home run off of Phil Hughes.

The backstop doesn't play all that often for the Orioles, but he does have hits in each of his last six games in the lineupincluding two home runs. Since being acquired by Baltimore early in the season, Hundley has hit .238 with four home runs and 15 RBI.

Hundley went 2-for-4 with a home run and a stolen base in Tuesday's 5-1 win over the White Sox.

It was a rare all-around performance for Hundley, who had no stolen bases and just two homers over his previous 32 games with the Orioles on the season. Though Hundley came through with one of his better showings of the season, the Orioles are satisfied with the work Caleb Joseph has done since taking over as the primary catcher for Matt Wieters, leaving spotty playing time available for Hundley.

Hundley went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts Sunday against the Indians, who were 2-for-2 on the basepaths against him.

It was originally thought that Hundley would step in as Matt Wieters' replacement behind the plate, but he's been outplayed by Caleb Joseph so far. Thus, the starts have been few and far between for Hundley.

Nick Hundley came through with an RBI single off Adam Warren in the 10th inning on Friday, leading the Orioles to a walk-off 3-2 victory.

The veteran backstop finished the night 2-for-4 with that critical RBI. With the two-hit effort, he's now hitting .264/.282/.384 with 13 RBI in 125 at-bats on the season. If he continues to swing the bat well, he could be in line for additional playing time behind the plate for the Orioles.

Nick Hundley had a go-ahead RBI single to lead the Orioles to a 7-6 victory over the Brewers in 10 innings on Monday.

Hundley, who was acquired from the Padres over the weekend as insurance for Matt Wieters, went 1-for-5 with a strikeout in his O's debut. He's worth a pickup in AL-only leagues, though Steve Clevenger should still get plenty of at-bats.

Orioles acquired C Nick Hundley from the Padres in exchange for LHP Troy Patton.

Hundley had been functioning as the third catcher in San Diego, hitting .271/.271/.373 with a homer and three RBI in his 59 at-bats. He'll work in tandem with Steve Clevenger to fill the O's void behind the plate while Matt Wieters is sidelined.
