Pirates signed RHP Elvin Ramirez to a minor league contract. He received an invite to spring training. Ramirez, traded to Angels by the Mets last spring for cash, collected an awful 5.46 ERA with a 49/45 K/BB ratio at the Triple-A level this past season. The 25-year-old with a live arm will provide injury insurance.

Angels sent RHP Elvin Ramirez outright to Triple-A Salt Lake. He's now off the 40-man roster. Ramirez holds an ugly 10.14 ERA and has walked 15 over his first eight innings at Salt Lake this season. He'll obviously need to right the ship before the Angels consider calling him up.

Mets recalled RHP Elvin Ramirez from Triple-A Buffalo. Ramirez will take the roster spot of Johan Santana, who was placed on the DL Saturday. He'll provide depth in the bullpen for the next few days until the Mets decide what to do with Santana's spot in the rotation. Earlier this season, Ramirez posted a 9.00 ERA and 2.71 WHIP over five appearances with the Mets.

Updating a previous report, it was Ramon Ramirez, not Elvin, who was injured during the celebration of Johan Santana's no-hitter on Friday. Ramirez was recently called up to replace Chris Schwinden on the active roster, and will be used in middle relief for the Mets. With Ramon Ramirez' injury, perhaps he may also find himself used in a setup capacity.

Mets purchased the contract of RHP Elvin Ramirez from Triple-A Buffalo. Ramirez earned the call-up with a 19/1 K/BB rate over 14 2/3 scoreless innings at Buffalo. He's likely to be used in low-leverage situations initially but could work his way up the food chain.

According to ESPN New York's Adam Rubin, the Mets will activate Josh Thole (concussion) from the disabled list and promote Elvin Ramirez from Triple-A on Friday. Corresponding roster moves have not yet been announced. Thole has been cleared to return to the Mets and caught a full game on the farm Thursday. Ramirez has been lights-out in Buffalo this season and the Mets hope he can continue that success in a middle relief role. The 25-year-old right-hander was selected by the Nationals from the Mets in 2010's Rule 5 Draft with the sixth pick and returned in October after missing all of last season rehabbing from shoulder surgery. Over 14 2/3 innings at Triple-A, he hasn't allowed a run, has given up only five hits and has posted a ridiculous 19/1 K/BB rate.
