Yankees signed RHP David Herndon to a split contract. The Yanks claimed Herndon off waivers earlier this month, but he declared free agency after being outrighted. Blue Jays designated RHP David Herndon for assignment. Toronto claimed Herndon form the Phillies just over a week ago, but he's now getting the boot to clear a roster spot for left-hander Scott Maine. Herndon, 27, should be able to find an organization that wants him.

According to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki, David Herndon "could be on his way toward Tommy John surgery." Herndon has been out of commission since late April with a strained muscle in his pitching elbow. It's not getting any better through rest and rehab, and the right-hander may have no other choice but to go under the knife. Tommy John reconstructive surgery would keep him sidelined through most of the 2013 season.
