Mariners signed OF-DH Wily Mo Pe¤a to a minor league contract. Pe¤a was cut loose by the D'Backs Sunday after being designated for assignment last week. He belted five homers in 46-bats during his time in Arizona, but also batted just .196 and struck out a lot. He'll likely be assigned to Triple-A Tacoma initially but could work his way up eventually and be used some in the DH spot.

The Indians are not interested in the recently designated for assignment Wily Mo Pe¤a. Pe¤a blasted five longballs in 46 at-bats with the D'Backs but also hit just .196 while striking out 19 times. He also is nearly incapable of playing the outfield and thus is limited to DH and/or pinch-hitting duty, something the Tribe doesn't have much use for.

Diamondbacks designated OF Wily Mo Pena for assignment. Pena slugged five home runs in 46 at-bats with the Diamondbacks but was let go Thursday due to his lack of defensive ability. He could draw interest elsewhere.

Wily Mo Pena hit his second homer in four at-bats as a pinch-hitter Monday against the Brewers. He has five homers in 39 at-bats since his callup. That comes with a 17/0 K/BB ratio, but it would be nice to see him get some outfield time to show what he could do.

Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said it's "possible" he could play Wily Mo Pe¤a in the outfield, but at the moment he has "no plans to do that." Pe¤a has been taking balls in the outfield before games, but evidently Gibson doesn't trust him out there in game situations yet. That's fine while the D'Backs are playing in AL parks and have the DH available, but it means Pe¤a's at-bats figure to be reduced drastically starting next week when they start playing NL teams again.

Wily Mo Pena got the start at DH on Friday and homered against the A's. The Diamondbacks still haven't given Pena any time in the outfield, so it's hard to see how he might fit in once interleague play is over. That he has four homers in 30 at-bats makes him pretty intriguing, but it's hard to imagine him being of any use if he's getting three or four at-bats per week as a pinch-hitter.

With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning on Tuesday, Wily Mo Pe¤a hit a two-run homer to win the game. Pe¤a's dramatic blast came off one of baseball's better middle relievers, Tony Sipp, against whom hitters were batting only .144 before the game. It was Pe¤a's third home run in only 25 at-bats since his call-up last week. His .652 career slugging percentage against the Indians is higher than against any other team. However, even with Tuesday's heroics, the ninth inning remains Pe¤a's worst frame for batting average (.216) and slugging percentage (.374).

Wily Mo Pe¤a slugged a home run in his 2011 debut Tuesday in a 7-2 win over the Royals. It was Pe¤a's only hit of the game and he struck out twice in four at-bats. Still, it's a positive sign for the 29-year-old slugger called up earlier in the day to play designated hitter in AL parks. Pe¤a slugged 21 home runs and registered a dominant .363/.439/.726 batting line in 63 games this season at the Triple-A level. If you could use a bat in your NL-only league, feel free to snatch Pe¤a immediately and hope for the best.

Diamondbacks purchased the contract of OF Wily Mo Pena from Triple-A Reno. Pena slugged 21 home runs and registered a dominant .363/.439/.726 batting line in 63 games this season at the Triple-A level. It'd be foolish to expect the same kind of results in the major leagues, but the 29-year-old is certainly capable of making some noise. He'll act as Arizona's designated hitter on Tuesday at Kansas City.

The Diamondbacks will waive Sean Burroughs and are expected to promote Wily Mo Pe¤a from Triple-A Reno to play designated hitter during interleague play, according to Jack Magruder of FOXSportsArizona.com. Burroughs hit just .261/.261/.304 in 23 plate appearances before Arizona pulled the plug. Now 29 years old, Pe¤a last appeared in the big leagues in 2008 as a member of the Nationals. He certainly earned his promotion, hitting a ludicrous .362/.440/.733 slash line with 21 homers and 62 RBI in 266 plate appearances on the farm. If you could use a bat in your NL-only league, you might consider picking up Pe¤a to see if he can continue raking at the major league level. Keep in mind that the former top prospect posted just a .753 OPS over seven seasons at the big league level earlier in his career.
