The Mets and RHP Ramon Ramirez avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.65 million contract. Ramirez gets a nice raise from the $1.65 million salary that he earned in 2011 with the Giants while posting a 2.62 ERA and 66/26 K/BB ratio across 68 2/3 innings. He'll function as a setup man this year for New York.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Giants are trying to trade either Ramon Ramirez or Jeremy Affeldt. The Giants have a ton of money tied up in their bullpen right now, so they are looking to clear payroll space in order to upgrade in other areas. Affeldt's $5 million club option was picked up in October while Ramirez stands to make a little over $2 million in his final year of arbitration. The 30-year-old Ramirez is coming off a career-best season and would likely be easier to move.

Ramon Ramirez and Eli Whiteside were ejected in the sixth inning of Friday's game against the Phillies for their involvement in a benches-clearing brawl. The whole incident got started when Ramirez hit Shane Victorino in the back with a pitch. Victorino began to walk toward Ramirez, which caused both benches to clear. The skirmish intensified after Whiteside attempted to tackle Placido Polanco. The scrum continued for quite some time, but eventually order was restored. Chris Stewart took Whiteside's place behind the plate while Jeremy Affeldt replaced Ramirez. Carlos Beltran was double-switched out of the game, which led to Cody Ross playing right field. Ramirez and Whiteside will both likely face suspensions and fines.
