Vargas is seeking a second opinion on his left foot after fouling a ball off of it Friday, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
Bollinger notes that Vargas was walking around the Twins clubhouse on crutches Saturday. Vargas has struggled mightily at the dish this spring with a .077/.250/.077 slash line in 13 at-bats. The timing of his injury is particularly unfortunate with roster cuts looming ahead of Opening Day. Conversely, fellow DH candidate Byungho Park has strung together an excellent .359/.422/.718 line over a larger sample of 39 at-bats this spring.

Vargas left Friday's game after fouling a ball off of his foot and bruising it, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
EDGE Analysis
Luckily for Vargas it doesn't sound like this will be a long-term injury, as he needs to get at-bats in before spring training ends. Still, his recovery will be worth watching, because every day Vargas misses is another chance for Byungho Park to make his case for the Twins' starting designated hitter job.

Vargas limped off the field in obvious pain after a flyout during Friday's spring training game, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
EDGE Analysis
Vargas was slated to get as many at-bats as possible before the regular season starts as he didn't get much playing time during Puerto Rico's WBC run. This wasn't about rust or a lack of conditioning -- Vargas fouled a ball off his shin -- but regardless, if Vargas misses significant time, this injury might just open the door for Byungho Park to grab the Twins' DH job.

Vargas is scheduled to start Friday's Grapefruit League game, LaVelle E. Neal III of the Star Tribune reports.
EDGE Analysis
Vargas, Minnesota's likely majority DH, mainly rode the bench during Puerto Rico's deep run to the World Baseball Classic finals, so manager Paul Molitor looks poised to get him as many reps as possible before the start of the season. Byungho Park has scorched opposing pitching during Vargas' WBC absence, but Park isn't on the 40-man roster and may have to clear some hurdles to join it. Vargas nonetheless remains an interesting deep-league power source for fantasy speculators.

Vargas went 2-for-5 with a home run for Puerto Rico in Sunday's win over Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic.
EDGE Analysis
Vargas hadn't played much before Sunday with just three at-bats in the WBC. He was just 1-for-13 in MLB spring training before leaving for the tournament. Vargas was the leading candidate for the starting DH job in Minnesota as spring training began, but he's struggled while Byungho Park has been hot (hitting .357 with three home runs). The battle for Minnesota's starting DH job will likely be decided late in spring training once Vargas returns from the WBC. Vargas' homer shows he won't be easily unseated.

Vargas has just three at-bats for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic and was just 1-for-13 in MLB spring training before leaving for the tournament.
EDGE Analysis
Vargas was the leading candidate for the starting DH job in Minnesota as spring training began, but he's struggled while Byungho Park has been hot (hitting .357 with three home runs). Still, it's probably too early in the spring to read too much in the competition since Vargas has hardly played (surprisingly losing playing time with Puerto Rico to T. J. Rivera). The battle for Minnesota's starting DH job will likely be decided late in spring training once Vargas returns from the WBC.

Vargas enters spring training as the leading candidate to win the starting DH job, ESPN 1500 am Twin Cities reports.
EDGE Analysis
Minnesota's DH spot is an open competition as Byungho Park and Robbie Grossman could also figure into the mix. Joe Mauer and Miguel Sano also figure to get time at DH as the Twins may regularly use the DH spot to give them days off from being in the field. Vargas had 10 home runs in 47 games last season, along with a .833 OPS and 13.6 percent walk rate. However, he'll need to make better contact (63 percent contact rate). It's also possible the switch hitter could platoon against lefties since he's shown sharp platoon splits (a MLB career 1.262 OPS vs. lefties, .654 OPS vs. righties).

Vargas went 2-for-5 with his tenth home run of the season in Thursday's win over Kansas City.
EDGE Analysis
Vargas has quietly had a productive season when he's been able to find playing time with a .897 OPS in 44 games. It's been hard for him to find consistent playing time with a logjam of players at first base and DH for the Twins. That's hopefully a situation that will be resolved when a new Twins GM is hired in the offseason, which could finally give Vargas a path to steady at-bats in the majors.

Vargas went 3-for-5 with his seventh home run in Tuesday's win over Detroit.
EDGE Analysis
With both Miguel Sano and Joe Mauer ailing with injuries, Vargas could get regular playing time the next week or more.

Vargas was officially recalled from Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday.
EDGE Analysis
With the Triple-A season now over, Vargas will rejoin the Twins, for whom he's appeared in 25 games this season, hitting .259 with six home runs and 13 RBI. The 26-year-old could see time at first base over the final month of the season, and he'll also be an option in the DH spot.
