The Rangers attempted to acquire J.P. Arencibia from the Blue Jays before the Jays non-tendered him, a source tells MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan. It stands to reason, then, that the Rangers will make a play for the 27-year-old now that he's a free agent. The catcher doesn't bring much defensively and owns a career .212 batting average, but he hit 21 home runs this past season and would be a nice power option off the bench for the Rangers. The team is also considering Kurt Suzuki as a potential backup to starting catcher Geovany Soto.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman writes that the Rangers could consider signing J.P. Arencibia. Arencibia was non-tendered on Monday after the Blue Jays were unable to find a taker via trade. While his projected salary in arbitration was too rich for his underwhelming production, someone will be willing to take a chance on his power bat. The Rangers are said to be considering signing Kurt Suzuki to use in a tandem with Geovany Soto.

Teams face an 11:59 p.m. deadline on Monday to tender contracts to their arbitration-eligible players, so the only question is whether the Blue Jays will find a taker in time. If not, he'll become a free agent.

The Blue Jays should be able to find a taker eventually.

This news comes as a bit of a surprise, as Arencibia is coming off a terrible year in which he batted .194 with a .592 OPS. However, teams are apparently interested in his power. The 27-year-old is arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter. With a trade a legitimate possibility, the Blue Jays are currently monitoring the free agent market for a replacement at catcher.

J.P. Arencibia went hitless in a fourth straight start Wednesday, dropping his average to .207. Arencibia tore it up this spring and in the first half of April, but he's been one of baseball's very worst players since and the Blue Jays must have serious reservations about going forward with him as their catcher in 2014. He currently has a .243 OBP and 131 strikeouts in 421 at-bats.

J.P. Arencibia belted a solo homer in Thursday's loss to the Yankees. His longball in the fifth inning was the only run the Blue Jays could muster off of Andy Pettitte. Arencibia has gone deep 19 times this season to go along with a .212 batting mark, so he's been just what fantasy owners should have expected.

J.P. Arencibia went 2-for-4 with a home run in the Blue Jays' loss on Tuesday. The homer was his first in nearly a month, his last coming on July 19. And what's more, Arencibia had gone 22 at-bats without even a hit -- dating back to July 29 -- before Tuesday's game. The home run was his 18th of the year, giving him 47 RBI.

J.P. Arencibia (knee) is in the Blue Jays' lineup Saturday. Arencibia is dealing with right knee bursitis, but will play through the injury. He returns to a .211/.247/.394 batting line with 17 home runs over 355 at-bats.
