Johan Santana (shoulder) had his Achilles examined after injuring himself when he retrieved a ball following a hit by pitch. It sounds like some pretty bad luck for Santana, though the results of the exam are not yet known. Santana was on track to join the Orioles' rotation on June 19, but that date might now have to be pushed back. The O's should have an update on the left-hander later Friday.

Johan Santana (shoulder) is scheduled to make an extended spring training start Friday of five innings and around 75 pitches. Santana is a total fantasy wild card in his return from another shoulder surgery, but the veteran left-hander was recently added to the Orioles' 40-man roster and could join the Baltimore rotation as soon as June 19.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Tuesday that the club is projecting Johan Santana (shoulder) to join the rotation on June 19. The skipper also didn't dismiss the possibility of using a six-man rotation once Santana is ready. The veteran left-hander has reach the upper-80s during recent extended spring training starts and will make his first rehab start on Sunday at Triple-A Norfolk. Santana is a total wild card but isn't a bad stash in deeper fantasy formats.

Orioles purchased the contract of LHP Johan Santana; placed him on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder injury. He'll now remain in the organization rather than opt out of his minor league deal. Santana has progressed slowly but steadily from a second shoulder capsule surgery and will begin a rehab assignment soon. He figures to use up most, if not all of his allotted rehab time but could be an option for the Orioles' rotation before the end of the month if all goes well.

Orioles executive VP Dan Duquette said Monday that they believe they'll be able to work out a deal to keep Johan Santana from opting out of his contract. The Orioles have until midnight to convince him to move back the opt-out date. Santana has pitched well in extended spring training and will likely move to a minor league affiliate soon if he stays with Baltimore. If all goes well, he could be an option for the team's rotation within the next month or so.

Johan Santana (shoulder) will make one more rehab start in extended spring training before moving up to Double-A and Triple-A. According to the Baltimore Sun's Dan Connolly, the unofficial schedule is to have Santana make his last extended spring start on June 2, then progressing to Triple-A on June 8 and ending at Double-A on June 13. That schedule would put him on track to be ready to join the Orioles in mid-June. He's got a June 1 opt-out date, which complicates things slightly, but if he's got a shot at joining the rotation he'll likely stick with the O's.

Johan Santana (shoulder) threw 76 pitches over 4 1/3 innings Tuesday in his latest start in extended spring training. Santana, who is making his way back from his second major shoulder surgery, gave up two runs on six hits and no walks while striking out eight batters. He sat in the 86-88 mph range with his fastball. The next step might be an official minor league rehab assignment.

Johan Santana (shoulder) will have one more outing in extended spring training before going out on a minor league rehab assignment. Santana went four-plus innings Thursday in an outing in extended spring training and added another 10 pitches in the bullpen. He reported topped out at 90 mph on his fastball, which is promising news. Santana is still a big gamble after his second major shoulder surgery, but it looks like he could be a factor for the Orioles at some point this season.

Johan Santana (shoulder) went four-plus innings in a start Thursday at extended spring training. Santana allowed one run on three hits, at one point hitting 90 mph with his fastball. This is promising stuff from the rehabbing left-hander, who hasn't appeared in a major league game since the 2012 season. Baltimore signed the 35-year-old to a minor league contract in March and the hope is that he'll be a rotation option later this summer.

Johan Santana (shoulder) is slated to throw four innings or 65 pitches Thursday in an extended spring training game. Santana has already completed two extended spring training outings, hitting between 87-89 mph with his fastball. The veteran left-hander is a lottery ticket after another major shoulder surgery, but the Orioles are hoping he'll pay off at some point this season.
