Joe Wieland (elbow) won't be allowed to begin a throwing program until early next year. Wieland will begin jogging next week, but he had Tommy John surgery just six weeks ago, so he's still got a long road ahead. The Padres hope he can contribute at some point during the second half next season.

Joe Wieland underwent successful Tommy John surgery Friday. Dr. Lewis Yocum performed the operation in Los Angeles. "The initial reports are that it went well," said Padres manager Bud Black. "Afterwards, Dr. Yocum said the ligament needed to be repaired." Wieland will be out until at least midseason next year.

Joe Wieland needs season-ending Tommy John surgery. Wieland has been sidelined since early May with an elbow issue and recently had a setback that necessitated another MRI, which revealed the need for the Tommy John procedure. The 22-year-old right-hander will aim to return for the second half next season but shouldn't realistically be counted on for production at the big league level until 2014.

Padres placed RHP Joe Wieland on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 7, with right elbow tightness. Wieland doesn't have any structural damage in his elbow, but the Padres don't want to take any chances with the young left-hander. He posted a 4.55 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 24/9 K/BB ratio across 27 2/3 innings covering five starts. It's not clear how long he'll be sidelined.
