Week 20 MLB Closers and Saves Report rotoballer.com Fri 8/10/18 3:45 AM

The dust finally settled after the trade deadline, and teams are starting to set their bullpens and pitching rotations up for the stretch run. Things can still change with waiver claims and post-deadline waiver trades, but any big names that were going to move already have. Brad Hand is settling in nicely in the Cleveland bullpen, Brad Ziegler is having a hard time in Arizona, and Brandon Kintzler hasn't allowed a run as a Cub yet. In non-deadline news, we saw a fill-in closer get hurt, so no[...]

Javy Guerra Recalled From Triple-A On Monday rotoballer.com Tue 7/10/18 3:23 AM

Miami Marlins relief pitcher Javy Guerra was called up from Triple-A New Orleans on Monday to take the spot of Drew Rucinski who was placed on the 10-day DL. Guerra has pitched 16 2/3 scoreless innings with the Baby Cakes while posting a sterling 24:3 K:BB ratio in that time. Look for him to hopefully continue providing solid ratios while pitching in the middle of the Marlins bullpen, but he remains off fantasy owners' radar at this time.

Review: FSTA League baseballguys.com Mon 10/8/12 12:20 PM

I stand accountable. More times than not I'm right, but sometimes I make mistakes. When I do, I'm not afraid to admit it. I'd like to think that helps to set me out a bit in this industry. I try to be transparent and truthful. To that end, I thought I would spend a few [...]

Each week I'll be answering questions that have been sent to me at the BaseballGuys' Twitter account. Would you drop Drew Stubbs for Trevor Plouffe? It's almost playoff time, and Stubbs can get ice cold as he is now. -- @joe_joe_a_go_go Before we go bashing Stubbs, let's not overlook what Plouffe has done, or better [...]

Bottom of the Ninth: The Dust Settles? razzball.com Thu 4/12/12 1:00 PM

Surprisingly, the dust has settled a few places and some of the riskier closers (Frank Francisco, Jim Johnson, Grant Balfour, Fernando Rodney (wtf?), Javy Guerra, etc.) have gotten off to good starts. That said, there's still a dash of turmoil in Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Miami, Toronto and Washington. Boston Red Sox - Mark Melancon is [...]

ABA 2011: A Review baseballguys.com Tue 3/20/12 11:59 AM

Yesterday in ABA: The New WHIP, I laid out my six year old idea now of how to better evaluate pitchers performance than the standard that is used in virtually every fantasy league -- WHIP. Instead I suggested that Average Bases Allowed (ABA) -- recorded by taking Total Bases + Walks divided by Innings Pitched [...]

Yesterday in SWIP: 2012 -- Starters, I gave a detailed description of exactly what SWIP is before I took a look at the starting pitcher pool from 2011. In PART II of my SWIP report, I'll take a look at all the hurlers who tossed less than 160 innings including a discussion about the men [...]

2012 Fantasy Baseball Closer Report: Sleeper Candidates fantasyalarm.com Wed 3/14/12 12:54 PM

As we approach the start of the 2012 MLB season and fantasy baseball drafts are in full swing, watching every team's bullpen becomes imperative. It's easy to say that you're going to target Craig Kimbrel and Jonathan Papelbon in your draft, but things happen, trends change, and before you know it, you just missed a huge closer run in your draft and you start to feel that nervous pit in your stomach that's filled with concern for a lack of saves.  Sometimes, when that happens, you need to take a step back and regroup.  You need to assess where in your draft is the right time to make a move now that all of the top options are off the board.  So today, we're going to look at a few low end options who, according to their most recent ADP rankings, can be had at a bargain price.  You don't want to sleep on... Rafael Betancourt, COL -- Though he's never held down a closer's role, the Rockies felt very comfortable letting Huston Street go and supplanting him with Betancourt. His last two seasons have been phenomenal, posting double digit K/9 marks with very few walks and solid FIP totals.  His Achilles heel seems to still be the long ball which is never good for a fly ball pitcher in Coors Field, but he makes up for it with his high strikeout totals, particularly his 12.8% swinging strike percentage.  If missing bats is a must for a closer, then Betancourt fits the bill.  His most recent ADP numbers have him going around the 198th pick or the middle of the 16th round in standard 12-team mixed leagues. While you're building up the rest of your team with your early picks, you can get find just as much success with your bullpen by drafting Betancourt late. Javy Guerra, LAD -- While everyone just assumes that Kenley Jansen will take over the closer's role for the Dodgers, manager Don Mattingly continues to stand by and give votes of confidence to Guerra. And yet, Jansen...

Chris Carpenter was traded. Tommy Hanson has a concussion. Matt Moore won't have an innings pitched limit. The Dodgers named their closer, an it's not who you think. Raul Ibanez is a Yankee.
