Manager Ryne Sandberg said the Phillies have not discussed bringing Marquis up to the majors, CSN Philly reports. Marquis just returned from the disabled list at Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Wednesday. He allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings in his first start since straining his oblique last month. It is likely the Phillies will give him a look after he has a chance to shake off the rust in the minors.

Marquis (oblique) has been activated from the DL at Triple-A Lehigh Valley and will start Wednesday's game. On the shelf since July 22 with an oblique strain, the 35-year-old will return to the mound for the first time in over three weeks. He has not pitched in the majors this season but has impressed in five minor league starts, going 2-0 with a 1.84 ERA in 29.1 cumulative innings. If he continues to pitch well, he could make a couple starts for the last-place Phillies in September.

Sirius XM's Jim Bowden reports that Jason Marquis (elbow) auditioned for the Padres Sunday. Bowden says that Marquis was "impressive" in the throwing session. The veteran right-hander is seven months removed from Tommy John surgery and is expected to be game-ready by June. With Cory Luebke (elbow) out for the season and Joe Wieland's (elbow) status up in the air, the Padres could sign Marquis for depth purposes. The 35-year-old had a 4.05 ERA in 20 starts for San Diego last season.

Padres activated RHP Jason Marquis from the 60-day disabled list. Marquis promptly declared for free agency. Marquis underwent Tommy John surgery in July and will likely be sidelined late into the 2014 season, a status that will obviously suppress his open market appeal. The sinkerballer posted a 4.05 ERA over 20 starts for the Friars this past season.

Padres manager Bud Black confirmed Tuesday that Jason Marquis (elbow) will have Tommy John surgery. It appeared inevitable, as Marquis was recently found to have "significant damage" to the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow. The surgery will likely leave him sidelined until late in the 2014 season. The 35-year-old will be a free agent this winter.
