Vargas (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Wednesday, Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star reports.

Vargas had been working with the Royals' rookie-level club in Arizona, and he'll now progress to the Double-A level after striking out six hitters across 2.1 innings Friday. It's unclear how many more rehab appearances Vargas will make, but he remains on track for a late-August/early-September return.
