Upton (neck) was given a qualifying offer by the Padres on Friday, Corey Brock of MLB.com reports.
EDGE Analysis
The move comes as little surprise from the Padres perspective, but Upton is unlikely to sign the offer as he'll command more years and money on the open market. The 28-year-old took a bit of a step back in his only season in San Diego, hitting just .251 -- his worst average since 2008 -- but he also added 26 homers and 81 RBI and should be one of the most coveted hitters in free agency.
